I just watched The Illusionist...

... and though I know it didn't get good critic acclaim, it did make me realize how much I miss watching indy films since I no longer have the IFC, ~sigh~. What are some good (or even passible) pure Indy films that are out there in the past couple of years?

I liked it too. I'll have to see The Prestige, not sure of the storyline, but heard of it didn't think it would be the same as The Illusionist. Edward Norton in "make-up" sure looks different then Edward the normal guy, it's funny.

The Prestige is pretty good too. Here's the plot: Robert and Alfred are rival magicians. When Alfred performs the ultimate magic trick, Robert tries desperately to find out the secret to the trick.

The Prestige was much better, imo. I don't think the Illusionist was very indie at all. If Jessica Biel is in it, it ain't indie. lol

I checked out the official website, looks really interesting I'll check it out maybe this coming weekend.

I think The Illusionist is an indy film though, same producers as Crash and Sideways, both indy. Liked those too.

You can check out the Spirit Awards site and see which indie films were nominated and won awards this year: http://filmindependent.or...ritawards/

Of those that were nominated I would recommend:

Pan's Labyrinth
Quinceañera
Half Nelson
American Gun
The Lives Of Others

and Little Miss Sunshine of course

I might rent The Dead Girl this week.

Thanks. I went to rent Pan's Labyrinth but it was out so that's how I ended up with The Illusionist. I don't think I can stomach Little Miss Sunshine right now, it sounds so cutesy w/the little girl and all. Not my mood right now. I'm not familiar with the others I'll check them out.

So are there any Black indy films out there worth it, I've seen a few but Daughters of the Dust seems to really stick with me, it moved me deeply for some reason. I did try to watch one from Africa but the storytelling was a bit off, though I have seen some African foreign films which I found real interesting, the African version of Carmen was deep, with the cultural differences mixed in.

I didn't think Little Miss Sunshine was cute really. It's more of a black comedy, at times morbid and rude. I'm surprised it became so popular.

You got me there. Movies like 'Half-Nelson' and 'American Gun' have lots of black characters in them, but real black indie films, the only one that comes to mind from the last few years in 'Antwone Fisher'. That was supposed to be good, but I haven't seen it.

I think because it ends up so cheery, with them dancing all together on the stage (actually I have a friend who hates it for selling out like that). And there are a lot of funny moments mixed in with the disturbing stuff. The disturbing stuff could even pass for quirky.

Also, sometimes the public actually goes for decent movies.

I've seen both 'The Prestige' (any film with Scarlett Johansson is a must-see for me) and 'The Illusionist'. One thing I liked about the former is how all the tricks were explained. I can't say the same for the latter film where the tricks looked more fantastic, but a bit unbelievable for the times. One flaw I found with 'The Prestige' was the ending. I thought the cinematography was better in 'The Illusionist' although both received Oscar nominations in that category this year.

I couldn't watch that part when they were onstage. I must have literally had my hand over my face peeking through my fingers. lol

And I had the Macaulay Culkin 'Home Alone' look when Olive began her dance routine. In retrospect it was very funny, but at the time I was more in shock. lol

lol

She was a runner up for a local beauty pageant, but she obviously somehow had never been to one before or watched on on TV.

The dance itself was kind of funny, more of a comment on the grandpa than anything--sick fuck!

Oh, yeah out of the blue the movie Tango, just hit me, I saw like the last 10 minutes of it once and I've always wanted to see the whole thing. Bet I can't find it to rent.

It was my favorite film of last year. Have you ever seen Guillermo Del Toro's 'The Devil's Backbone'? He likes doing mean stuff like that to kids.

No, I haven't seen The Devil's Backbone. And after Pan's Labyrinth, I'm not sure that I dare. biggrin

I have to admit, I didn't think Pan's Labyrinth was all that. If it had come out of Hollywood, I doubt as many eyelids would have been batted.

Talking of the Illusionist, that trick he does where you hold a coin to ur head? It works. Tried on a few people now (after making sure they hadn't seen The Illusionist of course)

It didn't matter to me whether it was indie or not. I just like Guillermo del Toro. smile
