Has anybody had any experience with getting a rescue dog? I thought about this because puppies are cute but they can be a lot of work with the whole potty training thing. But of course i'm not ruling out getting a puppy. But it would nice to get a dog that was alreay potty trained.

Are most rescues basically doggy misfits?

i have gotten rescues that were abused, and while they require a lot more patience and calmness, they have been the most loyal loving, dedicated pets i have ever had once they opened up to me and realized i wasnt going to hurt them.

Exactly!! Do not be in a rush and take your time to decide. I will always get rescue dogs for the rest of my life.

it takes some work and patience and you have to let them adjust at their own pace, but i had one - a cat- who the shelter actually actively tried to argue me out of taking. it took several weeks, but he would literally jump off the back of the couch into my arms and purr when i got home. he would also move room to room with me, always right by my side, and even used to get into jealous fights with my bf at the time.

I'm looking for a small breed, that isn't too hyper ( like a jack russel). I also don't want a yappy dog that barks a lot. I'm looking for something that is smart and independent and doesn't shed hair everywhere. Any ideas? Does anybody have any small breed dog that they can recommend?

So Westies and Scotties have different behaviors? don't they look pretty similar and aren't they about the same size?

Do Westies Bark alot? When you say westies are hyper, how hyper. Do they constantly pace in the house?

I didn’t say westies are hyper but saying that all dogs who eat additives and preservatives laden food can become hyper.

Westies where breed for rat and otter catching yet saying that all terrier’s where bred at one time to chase and hunt. Westies are a very intelligent breed and need to keep their brains occupied they have a will of their own but are also keen to please their owner. You must however be firm with them as they have an independent, determined and inquisitive, protective natures so you have 2 put the work in so that they know you are the pack leader or the dog will think it is the pack leader. I personally have never come across a yappy Westie at the Westie shelter they are mostly all very loving little dogs eager 2 please. With their intelligent minds they cannot be left alone for long periods of time but saying that I personally think that no dog should be left on its own for hours.

Their coat grows and needs regular grooming I personally groom him 3 times a week. They will also need to visit the groomer’s approx four times a year for trimming. They have a dense furry undercoat and a harsh outer coat, if you get your Westie coat clipped then s/he may loose the harsh texture to the outer coat. There is veterinary evidence for westies 2 prove a clipped dogs coat can increase skin disease so I personally believe hand stripping the coat should always be a priority find a good groomer 2 do this maybe difficult yet you can teach yourself to hand strip yet it is time consuming yet the results are brilliant and the coat will stay white and cleaner. Westies will thrive on good clean food with high quality proteins this is more costly but you will have a healthier dog that can live upto 15 years old

Westies are generally a healthy dog yet they can be pron 2 illnesses eg, Skin diseases, allergies, Legg-Calve-Perthes, Luxated Patella, Inflammatory Bowel Disease etc. diseases normally happen due 2 bad breeders.

Contact breed clubs also the KC/AKC registration boards you may have 2 wait upto 2 years for a dog but in my opinion well worth the wait.

I could go on and on but I wont LOL research west highland white terriers, contact the breed clubs, purchase books do not rush into getting a dog until you know all about the breed and think about contacting a breed rescue there are wonderful loving dogs that will give you much happiness if you give them a forever home, if you do that the breed rescue’s will always be on hand to offer information anytime you need.
DO NOT PURCHASE A PUPPY FROM A PET SHOPS , those dogs are normally from puppy farms.

Go to the humane society and pic up a small mixed breed dog.

I'm thinking of doing the same.

thumbs up!

Mixed breeds, on average, are healthier and have more stable temperments.

If you're set on a purebred, the schnauzer idea isn't bad, given what you've said you want. It's not unusual for them to be a little snappy, but if you get a sweet one, they are very nice dogs, smart. . . it's a critter with fur, so it will shed some, but they aren't unusually bad or anything.

Seriously, though, do a rescue. nod

I have been sponsoring 6 westies that where rescued from a puppy farmer and it has taken near 1 year 2 get them healthy, happy loving little dogs. 5 have gone 2 wonderful homes now only “frisky” (yes that’s his name LOL) he is an elderly gentleman who needs a chilled out home and the rescue centre told me last week they think they have found 1 for him they do half a dozen visits before they will decide just 2 make sure the dogs have a forever home. In my opinion rescuing a dog is rewarding and the dog in return seems 2 love you right back 10 folds.

My westie is the smartest dog I've ever had. And he loves to play games, but you will not ignore him. Don't get one unless you can give lots of attention and get ready for him to talkback! Also, terriers in general have their own opinions on things. lol My scottie wouldn't even come inside for my mom--only me. mushy

Winston was a rescue dog from Atlanta Pet Rescue.

I adopted him at 4 years old. He was previously owned by one of the Atlanta Braves whose wife purchased him "because he matched the decor", then I she re-decorated and he wasn't in the re-decorating plans.....

But, the happy ending to the story is, now I have him....

Scotties are great little dogs.....get one!

If I ever get a dog, it'll be a bulldog. What about those? They're not too big.

They're one of the few breeds that just tugs at my heart. Everyone thinks they're ugly though. lol
