Jail vs. going to work... I was watching a documentary on prisons. They drop facts befor going to commercial, like on "Modern Marvles". One of the facts was a figure about a certain Prison and how it costs $18,000 a year to house, clothe, feed, and provide medical attention. I was suprised by that figure and started poking around on the internet for more info.
The average minimum wage in the US is $5.54. I arrived at this figure by averging all the states together and the states not having a minimum wage law were put in at $0.00. The federal Minimum wage is 5.15. Replacing the $0.00's with the federal figure at 40 hours a week arrives at $6.04. Working 5 days a week at 8 hours, or 40 hours, someone erning the national average wage earns 10,636.8. The Same but making the federal minimum wage of a mere $5.15 is 9,888. All of these figures, of course, are before taxes. At $6.04 you earn $11,596 The average cost per year to incarcerate an inmate in the United States is $20,674, the Federal average cost is $23,542, and the State average is $20,261.11 Annual costs among local jail systems vary widely, from $8,037 to $66,795.12(Link to info Afeter digesting that, please remember that it is MANDATORY that a prison provide medical services for it's inmates at no cost to them. While the general public, NOT in prison, pays out of theur ass for theirs IF they can afford it. And...well look at the figures above. AMERICA IS THE GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD! what's YOUR opinion. "Slave" away at work or just go to jail...lol. I myself think it is a shame that companies are allowed to pay someone less than what it cost to keep someone alive in prison. The poverty levels in The "GREATEST" country are appauling.

What else is crap is when someone is sick in jail they get medical help immediately, but here in the UK, people have been waiting months and sometimes years for an operation, yet they cant jump the queue.. I will love you forever and you will never be forgotten - L.A.F.

I have friends and family who have been incarerated and did not receive the most basic of medical attention, even when they got very sick. Don't believe everything you hear. A dear friend of mine was detained by immigration (for missing a paperwork deadline, not for committing a crime, mind you - she was put in jail for this) while she was pregnant. She was there for almost four months and did not have one prenatal doctor visit, ultrasound, nothing. The Normal Whores Club

This is a point that is used to support a classic divide-and-conquer mentality. We who can't afford health care get angry at convicts and welfare mothers, instead of turning our attention on the system that should be taking care of all of its citizens without exception. The Normal Whores Club

However, I do know that in most capitalist Western countries, there is a popular misconception (enthusiastically reinforced by those in power) that the "lower class" is somehow constantly taking away from, and treated better than, the "middle class." That's what I meant by "don't believe everything you hear." The Normal Whores Club

I think that goes for jail, healthcare, detention etc as well. If what happened to your friend happened in the UK, the opposing political party would be all over it like flies. They tend to deal with that kind of stuff quite well here, I think. Rock n roll baby

In either place, it's fucked that everyone doesn't have access to something as basic as quality health care. I mean, is that really a privilege? The Normal Whores Club

Well thats the thing, here in the UK we are way more likely to bhave access to quality healthcare than in the US, because thats the deal here - everyone gets it for free. But when you're not paying for it, you have to wait for it. Rock n roll baby

Yeah, that's definitely better than here, but having to wait to be cared for when you're sick, injured or in need of an operation is not providing adequate access as far as I'm concerned. Thats exactly what people say here. Either way is just as bad really, if you compare the money needed for treatment in the US, or the time you have to wait for treatment in the UK. I don't know what I'd prefer to go through, thankfully I've never needed to wait for anything vital. Anyway. What was the point of the thread again?! Rock n roll baby
