Attention Smokers!

Who smokes here, and do you want to quit? I am a weekend smoker, but wish I wasn't a smoker at all. Unfortunately I like to indulge in a few mind altering beverages(alcohol)on the weekend, which leads to smoking. Anyone a former smoker who has quit, and do you feel better physically? Inspire me!

SAM...A friend of mine quit smoking and drinking when his wife got pregnant last year, and continues to be a "non-smoker"...He tried to quit several times, and didn't succeed...The KEY for him, was to replace the smokes with weightlifting, and it worked. He is now totally smoke free, and because he lifts, it makes him free of the stress that was causing him to smoke in the first place. He can now enjoy a few beers without any desire to smoke. I would encourage everyone to weightlift on a regular basis...It really does make you feel amazing. I lift a few times a week, and that's all it takes. I am 33, but honestly feel like I am 25 because of it. I have great skin, drink a ton of liquids, and stick to a healthy diet. I still smoke on the weekend, that's just me, but I would encourage EVERYONE to weightlift. Your energy will SOAR! Trust me!!!

I smoke just about a half pack a day and I throughly enjoy it! Weekends I probably smoke a pack a night, especially Saturdays. Sometimes I think I'd like to quit, but I'm just fooling myself. I love to smoke. The only thing I hate is the stench. And NO, I will NOT smoke cloves! lol They're for PUSSIES!

Obviously smoking is not good for you...but I was wondering if there are ANY beneficial affects. There has to be some study that has said at least 1 thing positive about cigs.

BTW, I smoke on weekends only...generally with alcohol or if I'm blunted.

Yes, in fact there have been some studies done that show cigarettes can stimulate the brain, and regular tobacco users did better on cognitive tests than non-smokers(in this particular study) I believe I read that in a particular men's health magazine a few months ago. And IF you are gonna drink and smoke, set aside a couple of days a week to hit the gym. It really does make a huge difference and believe me, you will enjoy those weekends WAY more with the energy you will have from working out.

Carrie, u might be on to something... if U smoke that clove that would definitely get one to stop smoking, at least until their tastebuds return to normal...

acutally if i don't want to smoke i eat chocolate or something with milk... > thats probably why all i drink is black coffee and gave up chocolate... ugh

Okay, well the way I see it, with your reference to being a 'weekend smoker', is that it's gotta be better than smoking every day. You are giving your body a chance to detox during the week, and health problems usually arise when your body is subjected to toxins on a constant basis. Also, there was a study I read about exercise and smoking...The people who regularly exercised but still smoked, were healthier than the non exercising smokers, AND, the people that didn't exercise at all, but have NEVER smoked, were just as unhealthy as the smokers...

So what they are saying is, if you just sit around and don't smoke you are fucked, and if you smoke you are fucked, but if you exercise on a regular basis, EVEN if you do smoke, you will be healthier than most people.

Well smoking isn't good for you at all anyway, but people who exercise enjoy a much more vigorous life, and are generally more upbeat and positive than others. Just talk to any personal trainer or fitness buff. Exercise affects all kinds of things in a positive way in your body, releasing endorphins, improving stamina, increased sex, drive, lowers blood pressure...I could go on for hours...BUT it makes total sense to me, that if you are going to smoke, you are better off working out than not. I am living proof of that. I had never exercised or lifted weights in my life up until I hit 25...I'm now 33, I drink and smoke on the weekends, and I have more energy now than I ever had in my teens and early 20's. So the working out totally worked for me. And it's not like I am a fitness enthusiast. I work out maybe twice a week for about 30-40 minutes. That's all you need baby! So fuckin' hit the gym, and grab a pack of smokes and some beer on the way home! It's all good smile

I believe you! I misunderstood, I thought it said people who smoke and exercise are healthier than non-smokers who exercise.

I totally agree working out makes you feel better. I've said on here before that I think at least 50% of people on medication for depression just need to hit the gym. If I skip a day or 2 then I'm a miserable bitch. It's amazing what a good workout can do for you!

No worries Carrielee...I couldn't agree more about the medication thing too. If people would just get a little more motivated they wouldn't need to continue to make excuses, and sit on their asses complaining about their health problems. And the companies making this shit are laughing all the way to the bank. There are people in other countries who have very few incidences of the kind of health issues we see here in Canada, and in the US...DIRECTLY attributed to their diet and exercise regimen. It really frustrates me that some people don't get that. Of course there are some people who have genetic issues, accidents etc. and other reasons to require medication, I wanna be clear about that so no one jumps on me here, but people should want to take their health seriously. I'm gonna have to start a new thread on this topic I think. I could really get going on this.

C'mon you weak ass people...just quit already!! damn! wink I'm telling you...it's hard hard mfin' hard to quit cold turkey...but the sad thing is...that for most of us...it takes something that makes you think you're (or someone you love) is going to die b4 you realize that you really do have to quit smoking...
after 8 weeks...I still feel like...well..if I could just have one...every once in awhile...that would be ok...but I know that's not the case...and it still pisses me off. LOL

Exercise every day.

Eat right.

Don't drink.

Avoid drugs.

Die anyway.

Live

The life excpectancy in the US is higher than its ever been and they STILL don't know what to do with the elderly. If you have to shave years off of your life whrough your lifestyle, better that their the end years. My grandmother was an alcoholic, smoked like a chimney, and was generally a miserable woman who lived to be 92 and as begging for death in the end.

Do what you want and have fun doing it. You wont beat the clock when the alarm goes off no matter what you do.

well...I don't know if I'm trying to beat the clock...but..I do know about quality of life...and don't think for a second that you'll be as lucky as your grandma...you may die a slow painful death...that your whole family gets to deal with...think of them if not yourself.

I smoke...but it's a choice...

If you want to quit, you need to first learn about addiction, not from the 12-step killers who will cram religion and powerlessness down your throat, but from a teacher who can actually inform you about your free will.

Check out http://www.rationalrecovery.org to learn how to tame the beast. The focus is more on alcoholism (and how the "disease" model is bullshit) but it applies to nicotine as well (and heroin, should any of you indulge, but I sincerely hope not).

Enjoy!
Fear is the mind-killer.
