Couple kills self after dog dies

HYDERABAD, India (Reuters) - Unable to come to terms with the death of their pet dog, an elderly couple in southern India committed suicide by hanging themselves, police said on Monday.

The bodies of 67-year-old retired soldier C.N. Madanraj and his wife, Tarabai, 63, were found on Sunday in their home in a suburb of Hyderabad.

Police said the childless couple had held a burial ceremony for their dog of 13 years, called "Puppy," and hosted a feast for friends before hanging themselves in their bedroom.

"The couple described the grief over their pet dog in the suicide note they left on March 29," said police inspector V. Anantaiah.

What is truly sad is that these people had NOTHING ELSE to live for.

this is rediculous, yes i understand that people can get as close to pets just as much as they can to humans, but still even if the suicide attempt was over their child (if they had one) it's still the coward way out. Sorry.
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Or thought they had. They had enough friends apparently to invite to a feast.

well none of us know what else was going on in their lives at the time. who knows one of them may have been ill or they may have been having financial troubles. I am not making excuses but some times if you have little or no family around for support- it can be quite lonely and maybe that dog was the only love and support they had besides one another...shrug

who knows- still sad...

There must have been something else going on for them to do something so drastic. I think they were in need of some serious help.

That's a bit of an extreme reaction on the couple's part, dontcha think? Not trying to sound insensitive here, because I know how attached you can become to a pet, and how much it hurts losing a pet, being an avid animal lover and pet owner myself. But to take your own life because you lost your dog? Guess I'm having trouble understanding it. You can always get another pet to replace the one you lost. Sure, it won't be the same dog or cat, but that does help to ease the pain of losing your former dog or cat somewhat. disbelief

Edited to say that in rereading the original post, it says that the couple had no children. They obviously must have felt like their dog was their only child, which I've seen happen before. sad

They should have looked into that whole cloning the pet thingy... some woman spent $25,000 to have a kitten cloned!

Now, I'm all about going to Albertsons and grabbing Fido out of some cardboard box that some kid and his mother is trying to get rid of cuz they didn't nueter or spay their dog...

The last dog I got (actually the last three pets I got) were rescues from the Humane Society...

They should have picked themselves up, and got themselves a clone! nod

$25,000 is a lot of money to have your pet cloned, but I have seen people do just that. All three of my cats are all former strays too. There are always animals looking for homes that have been abused/abandoned. The couple very easily could have adopted another dog instead of resorting to doing what they did. It just all seems so senseless.
