There's a manatee observation deck about 20 minutes from my house. I've been there a few times. The manatees congregate there mainly in winter cause the water is warmer there.

Cut creatures. Huge though.

I would love to see that! I saw some manatees in a tank in Florida once, they are pretty big. Plus I heard that because they are slow swimmers, they are prone to having run-ins with boat propellers. Poor things. sad
[Edited 3/22/07 17:07pm]

Yeah because they like really shallow water, so they're close to the surface and get cut up by boat propellers. sad

I swear, they've got to be one of my favorite animals. love (well, every animal is a favorite of mine I guess, but these are among the cutest)

excited

They might even be cuter than beluga whales. hmmm It's a close one.

Wow, you lucky swine!!! omg Stupid question but what was it like?

I am totally obsessed - well, highly interested lol - in blue whales. I saw a drawing, years ago, of a blue whale and they fit to scale various things such as a human being, a double-decker bus (!) and such forth. I just cannot fathom a creature that huge - it blows my mind. omg I'd love to see one in the flesh.

Me too. lol hug

Seriously, I think I would be in utter shock. I'm not sure if they show the BBC's 'Planet Earth' worship over there but the episode they filmed with whales... the boat they were in sailed *over* the whale and my housemate was saying "Look! Look!" but I still couldn't take it in. Just a complete feat of nature. worship

We went to New Zealand a few years ago and went whale watching. We saw 4 different sperm whales that day. mushy

(like an idiot, I resized this pic years back and didn't save the orginal size! doh! )

and then hundreds of dusky dolphins surrounded our boat and were flipping through the air. It was amazing. love

A blue whale sighting though is like the prize sighting of all whales. love I'd love to see one of those one day.

Wow. You even got a dive pic. Awesome.

It was pretty easy actually. You can tell when they're about to do down again because their dorsal fin starts curving above the surface and they dive down really slowly and then the tail comes up last. nod

I watched whales in Hermanus (South Africa) some years ago. Here's a pic my boyfriend shot:

I've gone whale watching quite a few times I just stupidly never brought a camera, so I never got a dive on film. sad

We did almost hit a Fin whale once on the way home from a watch...that was pretty exciting.

It was funny because my husband got so flustered when we had the first opportunity to get the tail coming up and he accidentely hit the "off" button on the camera, and we missed the first one of the day. lol Luckily we saw 3 more whales after that.

And with the dolphins doing full flips every other second all around us, we kept trying to get still photos of that, when we should have just hit the "record" feature on the camera instead. doh!

It would have been so cool to get a video of that because it was really surreal. All you could hear was the sound of their breathing/blow holes and the water against the boat.
