Who smokes here, and do you want to quit? I am a weekend smoker, but wish I wasn't a smoker at all. Unfortunately I like to indulge in a few mind altering beverages(alcohol)on the weekend, which leads to smoking. Anyone a former smoker who has quit, and do you feel better physically? Inspire me!

i have now been smoking 40 years and some, i have no intentions of quiting, but thats just me...
this thing about being a 'weekend smoker', in fact, a
'weekend' anything that can kill you is not worth it.
i quit drugs and drinking in 96.
cigaretts and fuckin are all i have left,
AND THEY GO HAND IN HAND!!!

Okay, well the way I see it, with your reference to being a 'weekend smoker', is that it's gotta be better than smoking every day. You are giving your body a chance to detox during the week, and health problems usually arise when your body is subjected to toxins on a constant basis. Also, there was a study I read about exercise and smoking...The people who regularly exercised but still smoked, were healthier than the non exercising smokers, AND, the people that didn't exercise at all, but have NEVER smoked, were just as unhealthy as the smokers...

So what they are saying is, if you just sit around and don't smoke you are fucked, and if you smoke you are fucked, but if you exercise on a regular basis, EVEN if you do smoke, you will be healthier than most people.

i guess one can make that inference, but no...
i'm sayin if you just smoke sometimes,or you just started to smoke, DO NOT waist time, QUIT NOW!!!
don't wait and try to do it after you have the true addiction. i you were a WEEKEND HAROIN ADDICT, yoou'ld still be an addict, but you'ld have a better shot (no pun)
at gettin over it than if you were a $300 a day person.
SO...
QUIT WHILE YOU'RE AHEAD!!!

Don't be lying on me like that..
We don't talk about everything. I can't talk to him about the sex I have, but he'll talk about everything else lol.

Now to get on the subject at hand smoking. I've been smoking for the last 16 years. I've quit more then I care to share. I want to quit, but it's hard because after you quit you gain weight because you are so use to putting your hand up to your mouth and most people eat. So I figure if you find something to get your mind off of cigarettes for 3 hours then you're 3 hours smoke free. See how long you can go without a cigarette.

How about all of the people that want to quit make a Pack everyone keeps up with everyone to be a support group?
Just a suggestion...

purplechild25,
the whole gaining weight thing...It's been 8 weeks today for me not smoking and I'd have to say...the first 2 weeks I felt like I was eating everything in sight...but after that...it was back to normal...so don't be affraid of that..cause it passes.
good luck to all those who try to quit...I was a long time smoker myself (15 16 years!) and had quit many times in the past...but so far so good this time around. It is SO FREAKIN' HARD!! but I did it..and so can you! smile

Yes.Cold Turkey in 1995. Smoked for 12 years.
Well first your sense of smell and taste get more acute. And then you may notice that you don't keep colds as long.
Then there's the money you save (ciggs are $4 a pack now,
right?)
And your clothes don't smell like smoke anymore.

I admit that once in a while, after social eating with friends and drinking in clubs or parties, a good smoke is cool. OPC, other peoples cigarettes are the best way to smoke to save you money and lungs. Congrats on the cold turkey 6--Ive only known one person who did it that way and was successful..of course it was a doctors scare...

ahhh recognition helps!! smile
thank you thank you I deserve it! smile

I've tried the weening off thing...as much as I wish it would work...it doesn't. I know people on the patch to quit smoking and it works great untill you stop using the patch...then it's all over.
cold turkey is the only way really...although my mom quit with the help of a hypnotist...and I never thought she'd quit..so..who knows right.

Purplechild25...went crazy around the 5th and 6th day...but those were the toughest...Driving...is another time that it is hard...just have something to hold between your fingers...like a cig but not a cig...it has to have the same feel or it doesn't really help. try a straw or a pen although..the pen is too heavy and the straw is to squishy..but..they are the easiest to try.
My sense of smell is always good..but has gotten better...my taste buds are def in overdrive now...don't know if that is such a good thing or not...I can now taste things like the cardboard container that my oatmeal comes in...lovely.
all in all the first 2 weeks are the hardest...after that it's all mental and no physical anymore...but to be honest..the mental has been getting to me lately...I want to be able to smoke once in a while...and I just know I can't do that. grrr!
one thing, my husband quit too...at the same time...if he hadn't quit with me...forget it...it would have never worked.
Right now, I just like to stand next to my friends that do smoke and breath deep! LOL ahhh!

Ya know, I've heard that nicotine addiction is as difficult to get over as heroin. I don't know how "they" calculated this or if its true. Anybody got any input?

I smoked for 5 years and quit on new years day 2000 and haven't touched one since. 2 days into stopping I had this weird feeling like I was flying, it was awful and I thought I'd give up and go back 2 the dreaded weed. I'm so happy I didn't. I don't snore no more, I don't cough constantly, my clothes don't smell, I aren't paying £5 a day and I don't have 2 worry about the blackness of my lungs
4 all my freinds who smoke I say give it up now. Life gets better daily, I promise

It is HARDER to get over heroin.Once the initial detox is finished, cravings are sometimes nonexistent or minimal.Avoiding same environments aids in the clean process. Cigarette cravings however are said to be more stronger and more longer lasting than the cravings for heroin once abstained from.
