- From the show's perspective, drug use caused the rise of the empire. Antony's will was "out the frame," and you KNOW he was zooted when he wrote it. But it gave Octavian all he needed to war on Antony, who would have bled him to death otherwise.

- Atia is truly cursed.

- Livia is every bit as conniving as she is portrayed in I, Claudius.

HBO has cancelled two of its three best shows, Rome and Deadwood. The only consolation is that The Sopranos is coming back for a finale in 2 weeks, Entourage returns at the same time, and The Wire (likely its best show) returns in the fall.

In any event, Livia is given a critical role in this series, which I recommend to ANYONE who loves Rome.

I can't find an official press release, but I can tell you this is the series finale. The reports I've seen indicate that the production costs didn't justify continuing on for HBO.

The production values of miniseries like Elizabeth I and shows like Deadwood and Rome exceed that of most movies, IMHO. I think it's great that they invest in such vivid historical depictions, but I can understand that sometimes the ratings don't justify the continued investment.

I think it's a mistake; they continued to invest in shows like The Wire to allow the audiences to catch up to the show, but they can't film Rome in Baltimore. I heard the production costs for season one neared 100 million, and even for the BBC and HBO combined, that's a lot of jack.

Ok I can't review this thread yet as you guys got me hoped up on the idea of watching it... Starting with season 1 disk 1 as I type!

Then again, The Wire succeeded on its merits, almost in spite of HBO, IMHO. The problem is that HBO cannot afford to make bad marketing decisions with a show as costly as Rome. They probably thought the show would sell itself. And, to a lot of folk, it did, just not well enough.
