CompuBox Analysis - De La Hoya vs. Vargas

COMPUBOX ANALYSIS

SEPTEMBER 14- LAS VEGAS, NV.
154 LB. CHAMPIONSHIP
OSCAR DELAHOYA VS. FERNANDO VARGAS

It's billed "Bad Blood" and Vargas has done more than his share to insure that when they touch gloves September 14 in Las Vegas, both fighters will be more than ready to do battle.

It appears the 12-5 'dog Vargas has gotten under delaHoya's skin and as the bigger, stronger and younger fighter, his best shot for an upset is to turn this 154-pound unification fight into a brawl. When's the last time you saw Oscar involved in a toe-to-toe slugfest? How about the second Chavez fight? Chavez's trash talk prior to their second meeting enraged Oscar so that he got macho with Chavez . How macho? In rounds 5 thru 8, Oscar landed 113 of 226 power punches (an average of 57 per round). He averaged 50 total punches thrown vs. Trinidad and Quartey, common opponents of both delaHoya and Vargas (Wilfredo Rivera another common opponent). 86% of Oscar's output in rounds 6 and 8 were power punches. Remember, he threw 31 jabs per round vs. Trinidad.

Chavez, whose best work was done at 130 lbs. (the delaHoya rematch was at 147 lbs), gave as good as he took vs. Oscar in rounds 5 thru 8, only his leathered skin began to leak and the much younger Oscar's didn't. Chavez landed 94 of 189 (50%) power shots during that same four round stretch, including 35 of 82 in round 8. The bad news was Oscar landed 40 of 73 in the 8th and cut the inside of Chavez's mouth so badly he quit on his stool. Too bad, because delaHoya looked a bit weary after the explosive 8th round. That was four years ago, Oscar's more mature and experienced now- unless Vargas' trash talk has pissed him off so bad that when he sees the opportunity for a knockout, he'll go all out to get it. That strategy didn't work for Oscar in the 12th round vs. Shane Mosley. Sensing he needed a big 12th round, (he actually tried to ko Mosley all night and walked into too many shots) Oscar let loose with 58 power shots, landing 15. The counter-punching Mosley had his biggest round, landing 39 of 61 power shots to ice the upset win.

They've fought three common opponents: Felix Trinidad, Ike Quartey and Wilfredo Rivera. We all know delaHoya fought in reverse the last 4 rounds vs. Trinidad, losing a split decision,. That doesn't diminish the work he did in the previous 8 rounds. Over 12 rounds, he landed 22 of 54 total punches (41%) vs. Felix, including 12 of 31 jabs (39%) and 10 of 23 power punches (44%-excellent connect pct.-not enough punches). Trinidad managed to average just 14 of 39 total punches (36%) and only 10 of 27 power punches (37%) vs. Oscar. Trinidad landed half of his 40 punches per round vs. Vargas, including 14 of 30 (47%) power punches. Vargas landed 19 of 50 (38%) vs. Tito and 11 of 29 power shots. He was down five times. Many feel Fernando's not the same fighter since.

Vargas' decision win over Quartey in April of 2000 was his best performance. He averaged 76 punches per round, landing 32 per round (42%). He also threw 25 jabs per round (the junior middleweight average is 25 per), landing 44% and he also landed 21 of 51 (41%) power punches. His busyness and lateral movement bothered Quartey so much that he managed to throw just 54 punches per round and only 24 jabs per round. Quartey holds the CompuBox record for jabs connected in a fight (313) in his draw with Jose Luis Lopez in '97. That's 26 LANDED per round! Can Fernando fight Oscar at this pace, with the same movement shown vs. Quartey. If Vargas can, he can defeat Oscar at his own game. Oscar landed just 17 of 46 total punches vs. Quartey and only 8 of 23 jabs per round. Ike was busier than Oscar, but not busy enough. (one judge did vote for Ike, who dropped Oscar in round 6 and also went down in the sixth and again in the 12th.) Quartey landed 17 of 51 total punches (33%) and outjabbed Oscar, landing 10 of 33. Mosley, who was thought to be smaller than Oscar but actually outweighed him and has a longer reach, outjabbed delaHoya as well, landing 9 of 31 to 8 of 23 for Oscar.

Oscar beat up on Rivera when they met in '97 as welterweights, dropping him early before an cut eye forced a stoppage in round 8. Not before Oscar landed 47% of his total punches (22 of 47) and 54% of his power shots (15 of 28). Rivera, not an accurate or hard puncher, landed just 11 of 62 (18%) total punches. Vargas ko'd Rivera (Rivera actually stopped fighting after his eye was cut) in the sixth round, five months after his the devastating ko loss to Trinidad. It wasn't easy, as the light-hitting Rivera dropped Vargas like a bag of rocks in the 2nd round. Rivera did not follow up and Vargas got back into the fight- sort of- Vargas averaged just 35 punches per round vs. Rivera and only 10 jabs per round. Rivera, who landed just 22% of his power punches vs. delaHoya, landed 39% vs. Vargas- he just didn't throw enough- only 7 of 18 per round. Was Vargas showing the effects of the Trinidad fight?

In his last outing, vs. former sparring partner and friend Shibata Flores, Vargas threw just 42 punches per round. Vargas was wobbled briefly in the first round and they were even in power connects 34-34 thru 4 rounds before Vargas wore out his buddies midsection.

Overall, delaHoya and Vargas' offensive numbers are similar vs. the 3 common opponents. DelaHoya landed 20 of 49 total punches (41%) - Vargas 22 of 54 (41%). Oscar's jab landed 9 of 24 times (38%) to 7 of 19 (37%) for Vargas. Vargas had the edge in power punces, landing 15 of 35 (43%) to 11 of 25 for Oscar (44%). Defensively, the edge goes to Oscar. Trinidad, Quartey and Rivera landed just 28% of their total punches vs. delaHoya to 39% vs. Vargas. The average junior middleweight lands 32% of his total punches. Vargas was hit with 35% of their jabs and 42% of their power shots compared to 22% with the jab vs. delaHoya and 33% with the power shots.

DelaHoya hit Javier Castillejo with everything but his corner stool in his first (and only) fight at junior middleweight, in June of 2001. He landed 34 of the 62 total punches (55%) he threw, including 52% of his power punches. (power punches being non-jabs). The key word here is power- many feel Oscar left his at 135-140 lbs. Also, they were originally scheduled to fight May 4 before a wrist injury that required surgery forced a postponment. Oscar has since "negotiated" with Vargas to fight with 10-ounce gloves instead of the mandated 8-ounce gloves in an apparent effort to protect his brittle money-makers. Rules state that 154 pounders and below use 8-ounce gloves, 160 and above, 10-ounce gloves. Rules? What rules? Remember Ray Leonard "negotiated" with Marvin Hagler to fight 12 rounds instead of 15? Bet Marvin wished he had 3 more rounds to chase down Ray, a 3-1 'dog, who pulled off the monumental upset coming off a three-year layoff.

Oscar's the solid favorite based on experience and Vargas' subpar performances in his last 2 fights. Oscar hasn't fought in 15 months- the longest layoff of his career. Has Vargas talked enough to stoke the multi-millionaire delaHoya's fire? Fernando's the bigger man and he truly believes he represents the true Mexican-American fan. He has vowed to fight to the finish in an attempt to punish Oscar for his condensending attitude throughout their careers. Tough to go against such a determined individual, however, that over-eagerness got Vargas in trouble vs. Trinidad and it could happen again late vs. delaHoya.

Brilliant work, sweetie... but this has nothing to do with the other topic. This is a detailed analysis by CompuBox.

You are not the queen of the org, little girl... so stop thinking that you are, okay?

I don't like either of them, but I am hoping for Vargas. If for no other reason than to rub it in someone's face! smile

How bold and daring of you to go with a 12 - 5 favorite...smile

What's the fascination with Oscar, Ice? The guy's not even a real fighter, he's a Rickey Martin wannabe.

I don't really have a fascination with DLH... I just think that he is a better boxer than Vargas...

This is a big fight and I love big fights... hell, I love small fights... fuck, I subscribe to The Ring and everthing...

I really do not like Vargas though... he has heart, determination and all that, but he is one of those guys that I just don't like due to his attitude and that rooster hair thing he has going on!

Probably, but will you give me 12 to 5?

Oscar won't win it by running, and Fernando WILL NOT back down. He'd (DLH) better come to fight like he did against Moseley - but we saw what happened then.
