i guess this one fits pretty well:
Anthony & The Johnsons - Cripple and the Starfish Mr. Muscle forcing bursting Stingy thingy into little me, me, me But just "ripple" said the cripple As my jaw dropped to the ground Smile smile It's true I always wanted love to be Hurtful And it's true I always wanted love to be Filled with pain And bruises Yes, so Cripple-Pig was happy Screamed " I just compeletely love you! And there's no rhyme or reason I'm changing like the seasons Watch! I'll even cut off my finger It will grow back like a Starfish! It will grow back like a Starfish! It will grow back like a Starfish!" Mr. Muscle, gazing boredly And he checking time did punch me And I sighed and bleeded like a windfall Happy bleedy, happy bruisy I am very happy So please hit me I am very very happy So please hurt me I am very happy So please hit me I am very very happy So come on hurt me I'll grow back like a Starfish I'll grow back like a Starfish I'll grow back like a Starfish I'll grow back like a Starfish I'll grow back like a Starfish I'll grow back like a Starfish I'll grow back like a Starfish I'll grow back like a Starfish Like a Starfish... and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

She can kill with a smile
She can wound with her eyes She can ruin your faith with her casual lies And she only reveals what she wants you to see She hides like a child But she's always a woman to me She can lead you to live She can take you or leave you She can ask for the truth But she'll never believe you And she'll take what you give her as long as it's free She steals like a thief But she's always a woman to me Oh, she takes care of herself She can wait if she wants She's ahead of her time Oh, and she never gives out And she never gives in She just changes her mind She will promise you more Than the Garden of Eden Then she'll carelessly cut you And laugh while you're bleedin' But she'll bring out the best And the worst you can be Blame it all on yourself Cause she's always a woman to me She is frequently kind And she's suddenly cruel She can do as she pleases She's nobody's fool But she can't be convicted She's earned her degree And the most she will do Is throw shadows at you But she's always a woman to me

Here's me a few years ago:
People say we got it made Don't they know we're so afraid Isolation We're afraid to be alone Everybody got to have a home Isolation Just a boy and a little girl Trying to change the whole wide world Isolation The world is just a little town Everybody trying to put us down Isolation I don't expect you to understand After you caused so much pain But then again you're not to blame You're just a human, a victim of the insane We're afraid of everyone Afraid of the sun Isolation The sun will never disappear But the world may not have many years Isolation Here's me now (except the left-handed part): Ziggy played guitar, jamming good with Wierd and Gilly, The Spiders from Mars. He played it left hand, but made it too far, Became the special man, then we were Ziggy's Band. Ziggy really sang, screwed up eyes and screwed down hairdo Like some cat from Japan, he could lick 'em by smiling He could leave 'me to hang Came on so loaded man, well hung and snow white tan. So where were the spiders while the fly tried to break our balls Just the beer light to guide us, So we bitched about his fans and should we crush his sweet hands? Ziggy played for time, jiving us that we were Voodoo The kids was just crass, he was the naz With God given ass He took it all too far but boy could he play guitar. Making love with his ego Ziggy sucked up into his mind Like a leper messiah When the kids had killed the man I had to break up the band My Legacy

Well of course some lyrics are better than others, but they're quite often a bit tacky or clichéd and, like I said above, often come across as "quasi poetry". It's too much to ask of a musician to be good at both composing and writing.

Usually the music itself, but of course I listen to the lyrics too. It can sometimes bug me when you get a near-masterpiece song (musically speaking) and then it comes with lame lyrics. That takes away from its perfection. Prince is an interesting case since he rarely writes poignant lyrics (most of it is just fluff to be honest) but since he's such a musical genius, he knows which words and sequences of words that sound good. It's like the lyrics become yet another musical instrument, and I find that fascinating. .

I think there are some lines in songs that are real poetry, though. My Legacy

I guess I have to agree with you on that, even though many of Prince's songs do have emotional value to me he does seem to know what sounds good and how to create a phrase that fits in with the music and gives it a sort of meaning without it coming across as horribly chessey or particularly deep. He facinates me as well.

Rolling the ball, rolling the ball, rolling the ball to me.
Rolling the ball, rolling the ball, rolling the ball to me. They arrived at an inconvenient time. I was hiding in a room in my mind. They made me look at myself. I saw it well. I'd shut the people out of my life. So now I take the opportunities: Wonderful teachers ready to teach me. I must work on my mind. For now I realise: Everyone of us has a heaven inside. Them heavy people hit me in a soft spot. Them heavy people help me. Them heavy people hit me in a soft spot. Rolling the ball, rolling the ball, rolling the ball to me. They open doorways that I thought were shut for good. They read me Gurdjieff and Jesu. They build up my body, break me emotionally. It's nearly killing me, but what a lovely feeling! I love the whirling of the dervishes. I love the beauty of rare innocence. You don't need no crystal ball, Don't fall for a magic wand. We humans got it all, we perform the miracles. Them heavy people hit me in a soft spot. Them heavy people help me. Them heavy people hit me in a soft spot. Rolling the ball, rolling the ball, rolling the ball to me. Rolling the ball, rolling the ball, rolling the ball to me. Rolling the ball, rolling the ball...
