And what reason is that? You think it would be boring?

To borrow a phrase from someone else, I think it's mostly pretentious hooey.

Boven Is Het Stil [It's Quiet Upstairs] by Gerbrand Bakker.

I normally stay away from Dutch 'literature', just cuz writing is OR pretentious OR it is really tacky. People who know the name Kluun or Reve know what I mean, except that Reve at least wrote ONE good book.

But this book, with it's beautiful sentences, beautiful descriptions and amazing repressed emotion has got me enthousiastic about a Dutch writer for the first time in ages.

Dutchies, please pick up this book cuz it is beautiful.

I've never even heard of it. But I'll remember this one.

It's true, Dutch (and Flemish) writing is often disappointing. But there are however some exceptions. I like Louis Paul Boon, and the poems of Gerrit Achterberg, Lucebert, Paul Snoek and Paul van Ostayen. 'Het spierenalfabet' by Peter Verhelst was very strange, but good as well. Stay away from 'Tongkat' however.

I also enjoyed 'Alles in het klein' (Eriek Verpaele)
'Tussen mes en keel' (Geerten Meysing). This last one was very pretentious, but I stillliked it. I must admit it's been 8 years since I read that one.

Will try Arthur Japin and Dimitri Verhulst soon.

That's why I've never discussed it with you. boxed

But hey, like I said, I'm willing to concede I'm wrong. I just don't think so yet.

non-fiction

About an high-profile Amsterdam real estate kingpin who got involved with the wrong people, the Amsterdam underworld, making real estate deals with them in order to do their criminal money-laundry. Things got out of hands and in the end he got caught in the criminal web with no way out. After being extorted for years he was finally executed on broad daylight in front of his office in one of the finest neighbourhoods in the city in May 2004.
The criminal players are also well known names, the main criminal is the former kidnapper of Alfred Heineken (beer). He has been arrested a year ago under suspicion of extortion and several execution within the Amsterdam criminal cicuits.
Trial starts in april, it's all highly actual, not a day goes buy without something in the news about it!
The book reads like a fast paced thriller!

Intruiging!

I haven't read this, but I just finished Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (same author), which I really liked. It was touching & very creative.

E.I.I. is now high on my list, tho I may watch the movie first.

I am reading/re-reading the Harry Potter series and listening to "The Testament" by John Grisham whenever I drive (which is really great so far and the reader is EXCELLENT compared to the last couple of books I've listened to in the car).

you wouldn't be interested in the book if you weren't familiar with the story. We all know the ending around here, it's in the news every day!
It's not about that, but about how it happened.
