A Song that Brought Me way back...

Tonight I heard “Small Town” by John Mellencamp, and that shit took me way back to the age of 12.

It’s funny how a song or a smell can totally bring back all these memories I once thought I had lost forever. Instantly I remember sleeping in a cramp tent a half mile from our little rural subdivision out in the woods near and old dirt trail.
Melissa, Bryan, Erick, Pam, Sandy and I would sneak some of our parent’s liquor or beer and cigarettes and sit around the camp fire at night drinking, playing naked poker, and all sorts of stupid games well into the early morning. During the summers we would sneak into the neighborhood swimming pool, located in a park at the back of the neighborhood and hidden from view of all but one house, and go skinny dipping.
I remember thinking these were my best friends, and we would be friends forever. Even as a military brat, the transience of life and my many friendships never struck me as being so utterly temperary. During school we’d try camping once a month on a Friday or Saturday night. I don’t recall ever worrying about the next day, let alone the rest of the week.
Nowadays, I can’t stop thinking about the future. I can’t stop worrying that the weekend is too short. I can’t recall feeling so carefree and uninhibited as I did when I was 12. I was invincible then.

Music is so important to me. Art is too. I need to respect that. I need to incorporate all that back into my life. It’s become too encumbered by Smokey illusions of obstacles and unnecessary practical constructs.

Ever had that bring-me-back-to-the-day feeling hit you in the face over a song, picture, or smell?

John Mellencamp always reminds me of my dad when i was young. he plays guitar and sings, and would always sing mellencamp. one time on vacation i saw a pink house and i said "daddy! a pink house!" and he belted out "LITTLE PINK HOUSES....FOR YOU AND ME!" it became a game after that.

touched i miss sitting around the backyard listening to him and my uncles play and sing. mushy

Motown...lots of the music that came from there. nod

Makes me remember, my parents having card parties...and us kids being free to run semi-wild around the house (no bedtime), getting into all kinds of shit (undetected, lol) until we just wore ourselves out.

A while ago I was in line at a bank and the guy in front of me must've been wearing the same cologne as the first boy I kissed, because he smelled exactly like him. I didn't even know I still remembered it! lol It was weird.

My brother came by for a visit today...he was wearing the same cologne that my ex-husband used to wear. I told him to go home.

Whenever I hear "If it isn't Love" by New Edition it reminds me of two things, my first ever concert as a 11 year old New Edition/P.M. Dawn It also reminds me of the first girl I kissed cause that song was playing in the background.
Also Summertime by D.J. Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince reminds me of backyard barbques.
Carpenters bend wood, fletchers bend arrows, wise men fashion themselves.

There are a couple of songs that really take me back but in a weird way. I get a weird feeling whenever I hear DANCING QUEEN by ABBA or SATURDAY...IN THE PARK by CHICAGO. Those songs came out when I was 8 or 9 years old I think.

REMINSCING by THE LITTLE RIVER BAND does that too.

It's not that I don't love those songs it's just I wish I knew why they give me a creepy feeling.

Great video.

I remember seeing pictures of Kenny at a wedding reception without a hat on--he's bald. Not that there's a big deal about it, but I think that's why he's always got a hat on.
