My wife does taxes. She's in no hurry to do ours because we'll probably end up owing this year.

Okay, I JUST got my W-2 today, but still need my bank statement. Going to call the bank on Monday to see what is up. I probably can still do my taxes and get an estimate as to how much money I think I will be getting back. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Done and e-filed. I'm going to use part of my refund to buy (well, okay, I already bought it, but the bill won't come until March) a Louis Vuitton passport cover, as my passport is getting a bit battered, and it won't expire until 2012. I'll do something "responsible" with the rest. Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |

Okay, just called the bank and found out why I didn't get an interest statement. Apparently, if the interest earned in any calendar year is under $10.00 (as mine was), they don't send a statement out. Which sucks, because I just called the IRS to see if I still needed to include it on my tax return form, and was told yes. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Hopefully you're getting money back, and not having to pay Uncle Sam. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Look at your January bank statement. Often it will say "Interest earned in 2006: --) somewhere on it.

To be sure, getting a refund means that you made an interest-free loan to Uncle Sam. But IMHO that's better than having to send in a check, which I've had to do at least twice -- being a two-income married couple seems to throw off withholding. Fortunately, the amount owed was never enough to get me hit with a penalty for underwithholding. Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |

Online banking can be another option -- mine shows total interest for the last calendar year, as well as year-to-date interest. Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |

I guess the IRS somehow will be able to access it, even if the bank didn't send me out a statement. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

I feel like I already give the government enough money with the taxes that I pay. But, if you have to, you have to. There isn't much choice, unfortunately. RIP, mom. Unless the bank issues a Form 1099-INT (a copy of which goes to the IRS), I doubt they can, unless you get audited. But the IRS was correct when they said that the interest is taxable, regardless of whether you get a 1099. It's only for $7.70, so I don't think it would be of great concern to them. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.
