Oh, I mentioned to a few of them that "I've had Vista since 2005"... they'd ask how, and I'd respond that it was sold under the name "Mac OS X." Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |

The backend of Vista is what makes it worth it. It's laid foundations for great things in the future. They had to cut back in order to not alienate their enormous corporate userbase.
btw, they didn't rip mac - things like widgets were in the pipeline for Vista when it was called Longhorn back in 03/04 - Apple saw the idea and got it out quicker. Very good move on their part because now all those not in the know give Vista flack for being unoriginal, but for some reason people tend to hate success stories. They had to cut back because a lot of stuff simply wasn't finished OR it was smoke and mirrors to begin with and they couldn't pull it off. If you compare Vista in release form to the Longhorn demo they were running back in 2003 it's a pretty shocking disappointment. btw, they didn't rip mac - things like widgets were in the pipeline for Vista when it was called Longhorn back in 03/04 - Apple saw the idea and got it out quicker. I hope you aren't suggesting that Apple saw the idea in Longhorn, thereby insinuating that MS had this idea first. Apps like Konfabulator (now known as Yahoo Widgets!) that provide modern day Widgets (based on a scripting language) for Mac users was first announced as early as 2002. There was also Desktop X for Window users, available for years... In general function there was even the Desk Accesories available on the original Macintosh. There's no point in worrying about who invented them because the idea has been around for years... Vista is simply late to the game because it takes them forever to release anything.

Yes, but I read (and obviously blogs can be biased) that the sidebar was originally going to be Microsoft's answer to the dock, before they realised that that was just too obvious plagiarism? And I agree with you that worrying about who invented what is pointless; all the OSes inspire/motivate each other, the argument is just fruitless and stems from user-preference. I personally am pro-Windows, then pro-Linux, and finally pro-Mac, only because I really like an ultra quick system and am not quite apt enough to run linux full-time, but I plan on being. It's possible. Way back in 2000 when early releases of OS X were first released they had a widget-like API for creating "Docklets" that sat in the Dock and gave out info like weather, battery life left, etc... In that respect, the early Sidebar was similar. Apple later deprecated that API as they brought back menu bar items and then Dashboard Widgets. I personally am pro-Windows, then pro-Linux, and finally pro-Mac, only because I really like an ultra quick system and am not quite apt enough to run linux full-time, but I plan on being.
Linux is, forever it seems, a step behind. I try it every once in a while but always end up giving up, simply because it always has some spectacular shortcoming in the Desktop Environment. For around 3 months last year, I tried out Ubuntu and have to say that it's the closest I've seen yet to a distro that's usable by the masses. The biggest problem with the distribution (and many others), however, is that in order to upgrade applications you must - in a great number of cases - upgrade the whole OS or jump through a lot of hoops. No user wants to upgrade their whole OS just to get the latest music player, for example.

Imago said: And why in the hell did they keep the registry? Oy
Originally, there was a plan to have a separate registry for 'legacy' software. That would have at least helped "somewhat" but just like 90% of what they were demoing back in 2003, it's missing in action. ..and I've just received word of a new security issue in Vista. Thanks to it's speech recognition system, supposedly, an audio file on a website can actually trigger a malicious action on the local machine. Sure, a UAC prompt should come up but how many users who are normally 'click crazy' anyway would just click right through that, if true?

Apple: iTunes users should wait on Vista SAN JOSE, Calif. - Apple Inc. is urging some iPod and iTunes users to hold off on upgrading computers to Windows Vista, warning that the iTunes music software may not work well with the new operating system from rival Microsoft Corp. Apple said iTunes may work with many Vista computers, but the company knows of some compatibility problems and recommends that users wait until it resolves the issues with an iTunes update in the next few weeks, the company said in a statement provided Friday by spokesman Derick Mains. The iTunes software is key to synching music on computers with iPod portable players. Microsoft launched Vista, its first major overhaul of Windows in five years, on Tuesday. Though Microsoft and Apple are partners in some cases — iTunes works with Windows PCs and Microsoft Office has a version for Macs — the two are also entrenched rivals. With Vista's launch, Apple ramped up its ad campaign attacks against Windows. According to a notice posted on Apple's Web site, compatibility problems include the inability to play music or video purchased from the online iTunes store, difficulties synchronizing contacts and calendars and possible failures of iPods plugged into a Vista computer. Apple also outlined precautionary steps users could take to try to minimize any problems should they upgrade to Vista now. Adam Anderson, a spokesman for Microsoft's Windows division, said the company did not believe iTunes users "should stop using Vista for these reasons." The company said it is working with a long list of partners, including Apple, to make sure their software is compatible with Vista. When the new operating system launched, Microsoft claimed more than 5,000 hardware and software products were already Vista-compatible. The company has a dedicated team working with Apple on getting iTunes running smoothly on Vista, and it will keep at it "until they have the program running to the quality level they're shooting for," Anderson said. Apple has sold more than 90 million iPods since the product was launched in October 2001. __ Associated Press Business Writer Jessica Mintz in New York contributed to this report.

Okay, so I had a chance today to play around with a new laptop running Vista. My reaction?
It's been over 5 years since XP came out... and this is the best they could come up with? Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |

I wonder how many changes took place "under the hood" of this thing.
It would a damned shame if it took Microsoft 5 years to add a few Mac features to their O/S.
