Are Digital Music Players replacing CD's??

Just noticed that my stack of CD's aren't moving as fast as they used to. I use DVDR's but CDR's are becoming extinct to me. I download all my music to my ipod or my treo. Is it the same with you all?

I believe they have been since 1999 and the advent of Napster. It's hardly surprising though.

I carry everything on my 200GB external USB hard drive. I still buy the music on CDs, but then it goes straight to the hard drive. The CDs are for my backups, more or less.

No. Not yet. few more things need to happen for CD's to become extinct.

While Itunes is a good model, it is not perfect. It's too propietary AND you cannot get all the music you want. Imports are impossible to get. Older music esp 12" and singles are impossible as well. And as long as folks like Prince don't have an iTunes presence, CD's will still be viable forms of music. Not to mention that if your hard drive crashes, there goes all your music (esp if you ripped them).

There is also no good model for the indie artist either. CD's are truly the home grown artists best friend.

Many people do not have computers still. Many don't have fast connections. Many don't own a listening device/MP3 player yet. You may think so, but is that because you live in a city?

I only listen to or burn a compact disc when a digital player is out of reach. And that's rare.

Many audiophiles don't like the sound of mp3 unless it's in lossless compression.

I think until the software for the players is able to compensate in real time for the information loss while playing, those folks will stick with CD.

Personally, if something is played between 160 and 192 compression I can't tell the difference between that and CD lol

Also, as SSB stated, iTunes is a wonderful model, but fairplay licensing is limiting (Can't be played on anything but iPods, etc.), and you can't find enough material out there to buy---example 80% of the music I like is not on iTunes, though iTunes has far more selection than alot of other stores. They'll need to address that.

That being said, eventually, digital music will replace CD Media--it's only a matter of time. One of my projects this year is to go through all my CDs and either rip them and throw them away, or dismiss them and throw them away. Either way, I plan on moving fully digital soon.

I believe there is a website where you can sell them, just pack them up and ship them. Why not make a little cash on them instead of filling up a landfill?

I do not have an MP3 player.

I buy cds every once in a blue moon these days and thats only because of habit. In a few years, they should be completely obsolete. I love my I-Pod.
