Fauxie said: cheers for the av No problem. May it attract many a chick. hey, know any decent lossless photo editing software that's not going to tax my crap computer?
I've got the free version of neat image at the moment to get rid of noise, but I'm still editing everything in ACDSee Pro and my 3.5MB pics are coming out the other end less than 1MB. ... [Edited 1/18/07 7:00am] That's weird. I use ACDSee myself and it doesn't change the "weight" of the picture unless you make drastic alterations and then it depends on the new look how heavy it is. If you've cropped it or reduced the number of colours for example, it will be lighter, whereas if you've added elements it will be heavier. I'm looking for better software too though since my pictures are in the RAW format and ACDSee only handles jpegs and similar. So I have to do a conversion that means a huge quality loss before I can even start to use ACDSee. I guess we both have to give in to the mighty Photoshop one day. It seems so complicated and finnicky. [Edited 1/18/07 7:14am]

http://www.irfanview.com/ Install also the package "all plug-ins". I'm not sure whether it's what you are looking for in your case, but it handles RAW.

Okay thanks, but it says on the website that it's just a viewer? What I'm looking for is some straightforward editing software for basic functions like contrast, colour, cropping etc. I guess I should have been more clear on that. Or maybe all the editing functions are included in the plug-ins? I appreciate the suggestion either way. If my Nikon viewer gives up on me, I know what to turn to.

It has contrast and colour correction and it can handle minor editing and straightforward cropping (it doesn't have a pencil tool though, so you can't add anything to it). But anyway, Irfanview is a must install these days in the Windows world.

She put up with a bunch of orgnotes from me a while back. She was too polite to ignore me, so she is kind for that.

Or maybe all the editing functions are included in the plug-ins? I appreciate the suggestion either way. If my Nikon viewer gives up on me, I know what to turn to. We're in the same boat. At the moment my pics are taken in the high quality format on the camera (but not RAW as my camera's stop reading cards - I take up to 3 pics at a time on the in-camera memory ). I open them in ACDsee Pro, do levels, contrast, colour, that kinda thing (but no extreme changes in each, ever), and use the clone tool to get rid of black specks and unwanted elements. I guess I do a fair bit of editing, but still, one save in ACDsee took a recent 3.5MB pic down to 995Kb. I then run pictures through Neat Image to remove noise or sharpen slightly if absolutely necessary. It's the trial version and only opens and saves jpegs, but doesn't seem to add or detract all that much to the file size (I'd definitely recommend it for noise removal). I want something that deals with RAW and has those basic functions, say colour, levels, cropping, and a clone tool. I remember Imago recommending a program called Gimp or something? I believe it was free. I don't need to do any fancy photoshopping though, and I can't get to grips with this whole layers thing or whatever they call them in Photoshop.
