Meryl is one of the few people in the industry worthy of the hype and the awards she gets. This performance was very deserving, so I'm glad she won. She makes the movie.

I agree. The Devil Wears Prada was a good movie because of her performance. biggrin

Deep down I know what a good actress Meryl is....I just love to see new
actresses break the sequence though....

Well look at the other nominees:

Dreamgirls (2006) - Beyoncé Knowles
Little Miss Sunshine (2006) - Toni Collette
Miss Potter (2006) - Renée Zellweger
Running with Scissors (2006) - Annette Bening

Completely unworthy this year, quite honestly. lol

The only actress to watch among this year's nominees is Emily Blunt, who is very very talented and was nominated for Supporting Actress for The Devil Wears Prada.

Annette Benning was stunning in Running With Scissors. And I heart Toni Collette. But this one did belong to Meryl, I have to agree.

The thing about Annette Bening, at least to me, is that with the exception of The Grifters, she pretty much always plays a variation on the same character. She's a character actress - a very good one, but a character actress nonetheless. Running With Scissors, which wanted desperately to be The Royal Tenenbaums, was no exception.

I really didn't even see a comparison to the Royal Tennenbaums... Interesting. Maybe cause I'd read the autobiography and was so excited to see it on screen. While the book was all about Augusten, I felt she utterly stole the show and the movie was about her and her struggles.

To each his own. biggrin I think she's been doing American Beauty redux for some time now.

The comparison is quirky nutso family comes unglued...script piles on eccentricity until audience cries uncle....they even stuck Gwynnie in there (EGADS!). lol The author's family says the book is completely fabricated, and I would't be surprised...eccentricity gets you published these days. But now he's got a lawsuit on his hands.
