This doesn't only happen to elderly ppl....I can remember calling an
ambulance for a guy in his early 30's once....everybody just stood there
watching him having this seizure and didn't do anything...I guess ppl are
just too afraid to get involved....

You, of course, did the right thing katt...

Sadly this happens with all ages I can understand why in some cases people would react differently but personally I can not understand why in this case they did. This woman was very frail looking I would say approx 110 lbs maybe lighter she could not harm a fly sigh

Thank goodness you knew what to do with the person. Some of the people may have been frightened because they weren't sure what to do with someone who's having a seizure. Though I can't understand why none of them didn't at least try to call for help or something.

Maybe they didn't know what was happening. When I was a lifeguard, a man at the pool started having a seizure--not in the water, he was sitting on a bench near the concession stand. Even though we were all lifeguards and trained in First Aid & CPR, at first we didn't know if he was just mentally disturbed b/c he was still sitting upright, clapping his hands and making weird noises.

Secondly, people may have been scared to do anything for fear of being sued if they responded incorrectly and injured the woman. (Good Samaritian law thing.)

Not saying it's right...just sayin'

The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

nod I can understand why some would think twice Jone70.
I do not beleive the UK have a good Samaritian law, We are in the cell phone culture now, everyone seems 2 have a cellphone also phoning the emergency services here is free so those people in my opinion have no excuse.

Yeah, that's the thing, trying to assist somebody if you don't have training can be scary to the point of paralyzing. But. . .how hard is it to call 911? I don't get it. disbelief

reminds me of a conversation that i had with my dad a while ago...he was kinda bitching about getting older, but then he started imagining what he'll be like when he gets even older. he went "i'ma be a bitch when i get old!" falloff

When there's an estate sale conducted by a certain business in town, they let antique/furniture dealers in early to get 1st dibbs. In one of the retirement villages, the locals rioted and closed the sale down over that practice. The elderly were the only ones who had the balls to protest.

Katt, I'm happy to hear what you did to help this elderly woman! You've got a good heart and that's special! I don't understand why more people don't get involved and help the elderly or anyone that is having a medical problem or just needs some sort of help. You get a :highfive from me! She will really appreciate the flowers as well! rose

I was able to help an elderly woman last year and it was also good to know that other people stopped as well as I to assist her. Here's what happened:

Last year I was driving down a main road with my mom in the car and all of a sudden we saw an elderly woman crossing a side street and she fell to the ground. She just basically collapsed and went down pretty hard. I looked at my mom and I said hold on and I pulled my car into a driveway quickly and jumped out of the car and ran over to the woman lying in the middle of the street. There were cars comming down the street towards her and I thought oh man I hope they don't run her over, maybe not paying attention. I bent down and of course I asked her if she was ok. She said I don't know what happened, and she was light headed. I had her head proped up against me and I had my arms under her shoulder so her head and face weren't hitting the street. Then several other women and a man all came over and luckly they had a cell phone, I don't have one. I told the woman that I would stay with her until the paramedics came. Also, luckily there was a fire station not far from where it happened and they came over after about 5 minutes. Then one of the women said, watch out she's bleeding. I hadn't noticed the blood, she cut her arm when she fell. The best that I could tell was that she is diabetic and didn't eat much and her blood sugar was low. The parmedics took care of her and that was the last I had heard about her. Then a few weeks later my mom comes home from work and said I have to show you something in the newspaper,it pertains to you. I was like what, I shouldn't be in the newspaper?

Our local newspaper has a "Thankful Thursday" section for the readers to give thanks. It turns out that the elderly woman that fell wrote to the newspaper and her note of thanks was printed. Here is a copy of the article and her note of thanks is printed at the end. Of course people appreciate when you help them, but I never expected to see it in the newspaper. So if you can ever help someone in an emergency, please do.

Too many these days are either apathetic or afraid to get involved.

You are a kindhearted soul, katt. Hopefully those who were there that day and did nothing to assist that woman learned from your example of compassion.

The question is; Why didn't anyone else intervene sooner? when it was clear the woman needed help.
People are like lemmings. All it took was a few to keep walking and everyone did so. There's a group mentality that dictates "ignore circumstances". You rose above it. Every time I have jury duty, I take a look around the room and think, this is your average American??? It's a crosscut of the community. The same people who wouldn't help another. Bizarre.
