Ex-Moderator | I'm currently reading Not in Front of the Children; "Indecency," Censorship and the Innocence of Youth. It's a history of "indecency" laws and other resttrictions aimed at protecting youth. It's really very interesting.
And I just finished up The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy & Other Stories. It's a collection of short poems with accompanying illustrations by that fabulously dark and twisted man, Tim Burton. |

"In search of schrodinger's cat" by John Gribbin, (very good 'who, what, when' about quantum physics) That was a great book! He wrote another one called "Schrodinger's Kittens" that you should check out too! I have a bunch of his books! Thanks, I'll definitely check out Schrodingers Kittens. Schrodingers Cat was really well written, I learned a lot about the evolution & origins of Quantum theory that I didn't know. I also hadn't heard that Niels Bohr quote before "Anyone who is not shocked by quantum theory has not understood it", spot on. I have to admit I've always found quantum theory fascinating. It bugs me in the same way it always bugged Einstein - it works, but the implications are just insane. Definitely up there with "A brief history of time".

He went a different direction with the Dark Tower stuff. I must say that the first books totally excited me. The style was different, slow paced. I liked it alot. But the latest instalment kind of puzzled me. He takes a different direction with the series and I am not sure I like it. I must say that I like his slower paced books and not too much fond of books like IT or books featuring strange aliens. I like his slower paced, human interest stories alot. This is where he is best. I have not read his EVERY book, but it seemed that in the latest Dark Tower instalment he suddenly has characters from other books making an appearance, something I was not very happy about. I liked that the Dark Tower series was a one off... Still very much looking forward to the new books, though...

Not reading this book at the moment, but it made a good impression on me;
All Families Are Psychotic By Douglas Coupland. I think I read two books by this writer. Both of them had very interesting characters. I think the first one I read was Girlfriend In A Coma, but I am not sure if this was his though (too lazy to go explore). The Psychotic had a brilliant summary, including a line that read sumthing like; "Midday; Pill 'O Clock" Those are the kind of things that draw me in. THe plotline is insane. Can someone please make a good movie out of this? And can someone PLEASE kill Terry Pratchett? I mean; The Discworld was fun in the beginning, but he is really milking his franchise and I do not think his writing is becoming better. The thicker the Pratchett, the lesser the content.

Another kewl, strange read; a book called The Wooden Sea, by Jonathan Carrol. This book blew my mind. Again, there is something that looks normal and then turns into something completely different, like this other book by this author, called Sleeping In Flame that also contained plot twists that sweetly puzzled me.

Laura Blumenfeld "Revenge: a Story of Hope". If her book is as good as the interview she gave Tim Sebastian this week on the wonderful Hardtalk it will be very good indeed. Just a thought.

Myself,I'm reading a book called Black House and was written by Stephen King/Peter Straub.Its about a guy that abducts children and eats their organs. Okay, that's gross. I just read Around the World in 80 Days. That wasn't nearly as gross.

Knew it must be bought after the turn of the 1st page. (Thanx 2 all those who mentioned it on the 1st book thread) Afterwhich, Another Country - Got a feeling I'll enjoy this one. Over the weekend I read "Coraline" by Neil Gaiman, the new Chuck Palahniuk called"Lullaby" and "The Nanny Diaries"
"Coraline" is a nice little horror story with interesting characters, esp the black cat. "Lullaby" again does not dissappoint. The leads are open enought to let your own fantasy run free (good writers do not dictate) and the storyline is again original and fun. "And I keep on counting...357, 358, 359" "The Nanny Diaries" are girl stuff, like Lisa Jewel, but without intersting characters and without the British humour. Just for fun. Makes you miss Mary Poppins, really. And I still had time left to have a great saturday evening out with my boyfriend and a nice dinner with my boss on sunday... I'm finally reading "John Adams" by David McCullough. It keeps getting better!
I am convinced that high school history was either poorly taught or poorly timed (or both). It is so much more interesting to me at this stage of my life. I'd encourage anyone to pick up this book, learn about our history, and be inspired by a story of love, courage, and patriotism (the good kind). ___ "When they tell me 2 walk a straight line, I put on crooked shoes"
