Totally spaced on Little Miss Sunshine and Shortbus. I think I enjoyed Little Miss Sunshine the most out of any movie last year.

Laughwise:

Snakes On A Plane
Clerks II

I really have to see Volver very soon.

I didn't see that many movies last year. Of the ones I remember that were really good:

The Queen
Babel
Shut Up And Sing
The Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D
QuinceaƱera
Superman Returns
Little Children
American Hardcore

And then there was this one that I actually saw twice:

Drawing Restraint 9 confuse

The only thing I liked about that movie was Samantha Morton. She saved that film from being a total disaster.

every bit of my being wanted to love that movie. matthew barney. bjork. it seemed tailored for me to worship.

but damn. disbelief

some scenes from it i thought were quite pretty, and i typically love barney's whole schtick and let's face it, i just like looking at bjork. giggle

but that was a chore of a movie to get through. wow. i'm glad i saw it, but i don't know that i could ever watch it again. and i got through the whole cremaster cycle (and would do it again!).

Casino Royale cool
The Departed
The Aristocrats (I'm pretty sure that was 2006?)

Is Robert De Niro's "Good Shepherd" film any good?

In terms of commercial Hollywood films, I also enjoyed The Lake House, mostly for its slightly melancholy tone, nice filming and Sandra Bullock.

Glad to see somebody mention this one. Movies that recall the 1950s heyday of Hollywood melodramas are rare, so I'm always glad to see them when they make it into theatres. In this case, it was also a bit of really light sci-fi. What a nice surprise this movie was.

nod It was like watching an old Douglas Sirk picture. I liked its pace very much.

Was Libertine 2006? I actually did really like that movie. Some people really hated it, not sure why...

Others:
Shortbus
Pan's Labyrinth
Casino Royale

Worst, but so bad it's a must-watch new camp classic: Wicker Man

Still dying to see: Children of Men

I thought "shortbus" had some of the worst acting and amateurish scenes, like when she freaks out and slaps the guy while they are all seeing her as a therapist. It was like a student film in that part, forced to try to be dramatic in an unconvincing way... at least to me.

weird. i thought the acting was good. i thought it was a deeply flawed movie mainly in that it wasn't as inclusive as it seemed to want to be, but i also think that's the risk they took with the film's subject matter, so no matter how big of a net got cast, they'd never catch everything. the performances were fine, i thought. then again, edith massey is one of my favorite actresses. shrug

I don't think it was completely boring but it was a better experiment than it was a movie. I'd agree that the acting was terrible, outside of the lead actress anyway. JCM had been working on this movie a long time, pretty much since he finished Hedwig. That's a lot of work for something so eh.

dustysgirl

from Netflix: After losing her husband to illness, 8-year-old Chuyia (Sarala) is forced to live out the rest of her days in a temple for Hindu widows, communing with 14 other women and a cruel headmistress who agrees to take her in. But it's through the trials of another widow, a beautiful prostitute named Kalyani (Lisa Ray) who's being courted by a man from a lower caste (John Abraham), that Chuyia learns the true restrictions of widowhood.

This is the type of movie that you think about for days afterward. After like five minutes, I didn't mind the subtitles and was completely engrossed in the movie, and weeping at the end.

nod so, so, soooo good! classic Pedro. Penelope Cruz, Spanish actress, is light years ahead of Penelope Cruz, American film star. There's a depth and beauty in this performance that I've only seen glimpses of in her previous Spanish language roles, and not at all in her American movies. And to see Carmen Maura back... ahhh. It reminded me how much I need to get fluent in Spanish and go live in Spain.
