hot damn i've been meaning to watch it for years. I think I only saw five of them but I love the way Kieslowski introduces and builds a story. He just throws you in the middle and lets you figure out what's going on as it happens. [Edited 1/4/07 9:09am]

Hmmm.....what movies did I even SEE this year? I have pretty much given up on contemporary movies
I remember The Devil Wears Prada, which I saw for Meryl Streep's fabulous performance. Certainly not for the rote bullshit girl-in-the-city plotline . In terms of commercial Hollywood films, I also enjoyed The Lake House, mostly for its slightly melancholy tone, nice filming and Sandra Bullock. My favorite movie of the year was A Prairie Home Companion, Robert Altman's final great film. I saw Borat, and it was nice while it lasted, but I forgot about it the moment I left the theater. It was what it was. It's too bad he didn't use more wit and less scatology. [Edited 1/5/07 17:32pm]

The whole movie is Meryl, who deserves an Oscar nomination. I mean that's the reason you go see it. Meryl and Emily Blunt in a great supporting role. Without those two it would have been every other damn movie. Talk about great actors elevating a cliche script to something good. [Edited 1/5/07 17:35pm]

It didn't get good reviews...I'm a huge Garrison Keillor fan, but thought it might not live up to the original...

Look like good reviews to me The thing is, the movie plays like they used to make 'em. Dialogue and acting and small moments and it's just a pleasure to watch. A lot of people may not like that style of film, but it's fabulous if you do. His composition and color use are also stunning. [Edited 1/5/07 17:42pm]

There are still a few movies I need to see that may end up on my year-end list. Of those I've seen these are definitely toward the top:
The Queen A Prairie Home Companion The Departed United 93 One of those is surely my favorite, but I can't decide which.

Glad to see somebody mention this one. Movies that recall the 1950s heyday of Hollywood melodramas are rare, so I'm always glad to see them when they make it into theatres. In this case, it was also a bit of really light sci-fi. What a nice surprise this movie was.
