If you like your drinking water cold, get a Brita pitcher for the fridge. They don't cost all that much and they work really well.

If you don't really like it cold, get one of the faucet things. They are kinda bulky and can get in the way, depending on your sink/faucet setup, but they work equally well.

Both are cheaper than bottled water, and you don't waste all of that plastic. thumbs up!

I just filled my cup with tap water and when I went to drink some water, it smelled like chlorine or whatever. It made my stomach churn almost wanting to puke.

I think it's time I switch to bottled water.

Anyone had that experience?

that what we country folk call city water! barf I can even taste it in ice when I go out to a restaurant or movie or something.

True, I'm very spoiled, but so is the water in america. In some countries it's actually safe to drink water straight from the ground. Not here.

It's almost like that Star Trek where they thought they'd found Eden, but the plants were acidic. It's sad that it's not safe for us to drink from rivers.

what? the water is safe to drink right outta the ground in my part of america whofarted

yes, from a well. I've NEVER heard that you are not supposed to drink from any rivers in the US. I'm gonna have to look into that. I know I have drank from rivers and I'm still here biggrin

yeah, I know some are safe, they just advise campers not to drink from any since you can't be sure. Maybe it's like Mexico, and you can become accustomed to local bacteria over time.

I first learned this hiking with my family. I drank from the river, and moments later (totally coincidence) my brother asks my dad "is it true you shouldn't drink form any river?" and he says "yes"

I thought I was going to die! Of course I was fine

I've always heard that if the water is running swiftly...it's probably safe to drink. I mean...I wouldn't drink from a swiftly running river that's running through the city but...I'd probably drink from any swift water river running thru most any rural area. smile but maybe that's cause I grew up in the country. smile

That's true. Guides tell you if you have to drink unfiltered water it's best if it runs swift & smooth (not churned up by rocks) because the yucky stuff is more likely to fall to the bottom. And don't drink after a rain, but that's pretty obvious since the rivers are usually kinda brown.

Also if you can find a spring coming right out of the ground, that's probably safe, too.

But even bad water probably won't kill you, it'll just mess up your insides for a few days.

You can't really be an environmentalist and drink bottled water. It's insanely wasteful.

This is one of the few areas where there is an advantage to living in Iceland IMO..... clean tap water! But if you visit in Reykjavík, just make sure you're ONLY using the cold tap when drinking because the hot water in those areas that use geothermal heating (including for instance Reykjavík and most of the south-west) can smell kinda funky, especially in old houses...

Yech, does it smell like sulfur?

We're not supposed to drink or cook with hot water in the US either for some reason, maybe more chemicals?

It does smell like sulfur, although it probably depends on how new (or old) the houses are whether the smell is very noticeable or not..... it probably is noticeable to foreigners or those who live in areas without geothermal heat but I guess I don't notice it as much as I used to since I've now lived in Reykjavík for the past 8 years.

Does the water get heated geothermally, or the houses?

I think a lot of it is what you're used to as well. I had well water growing up (my parents still do) and I hated city water then. Now that I've lived in the city so long, my parents water tastes odd to me.

I had tap water at a restaurant near my work recently (out in the suburbs) and couldn't drink it, it smelled so bad!

True, when i was a kid I drank the tap water, and I couldn't stand Sparkletts or other bottled water. Of course, now the opposite is true.
