Ever do karaoke?

I did it for the first time last night.

I love my fuckin' weird family. We went out for Chinese food and then a karaoke bar on xmas eve. 'Cause that's how we roll. mushy

They live out in Hickville, USA (Buckley, WA). I lived out there as a teenager. I fucking hated every minute of it. Every time I go out to "enjoy" the "nightlife" with my sister when I'm in town, I swear I will never ever do it again. Going out to a place that holds Kick A Queer contests on Tuesday nights along with my girlfriend and my gay husband makes me a little queasy.

But. I decided it would all be ok if I got up and sang "American Idiot" to 'em. And I did. And it was deeply satisfying.

Do you guys do it? Are you good?

I tried karaoke for the first time in Vancouver a few years ago. For some reason I couldn't hear myself singing, which was frightening since the room was full of people listening attentively, so I decided to put a little extra spin on the songs in a jokey way without going with all out farce (I hate it when people do that). But then when I got to U2's "One" I thought "oh fuck it, I'll just do my very best with this one and see how it goes" and to my great surprise everybody honestly thought I did a really good job. They called me Bono for weeks afterwards. smile

Then in Japan, where I guess it's much more important to do a good job, I screwed up every single song no matter how hard I tried and was probably downright embarrassing. Fortunately I couldn't understand what they might have said about me afterwards. lol

Sounds fun!

I've done a handful of karaoke.
I hosted a karoke party once, even.
I won't do it anymore, though, really.

I freaking love karaoke. I don't think I had a social life until I found it. It's not like I'm that good; I do a better job of mocking the original artists' pitch than anything else. Except 'Promises in the Dark' - I sound nothing like Pat Benatar. I drop it a couple octaves and sing it overly dramatic like Meatloaf.

But I can do a dead-on "Sweet Transvestite" from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. I cut my teeth on REM's "It's the End of the World..." & Smashing Pumpkins' "Bullet With Butterfly Wings". I do too many 80's songs like "Weird Science" or "You Spin Me Round"...but since the Corner Inn tends towards R&B vocalists...perhaps I provide a slight alternative.

There have been some poor decisions along the way. At a family picnic, I got a little too drunk and laid out "Give it Away" (RHCP) before remembering the lyrics to the song. I've tried to channel Tom Waits while singing "Purple Rain". Due to my limited range, I am not allowed to sing Stevie Wonder ever again.

In a perfect world, every song out there would be available as a .kar file.

I have a cult following at my local karaoke den of choice.

Ask Applekisses. She's witnessed my performances. And somehow lived to tell the tale.

One thing shitty about getting older--I have asthma attacks now when I really belt out a song...which never happened before.

I like doing karaoke sometimes.

But I actually like the bad singers better than the ones who take it all serious. It's not carnegie hall, now is it?

No, I was kidding, silly. rolleyes

EVERY night there is Kick A Queer night! They can't confine that kind of thing to one night per week. People wouldn't have it.
