Great topic....I feel my perception is not more of knowlege but more of viewpoint. I see the world very different than most....almost alien IMO. Most things seem like an obvious common sense thing when others see it as difficult or can't see the answer at all. I liken it to the Matrix movie and the book the Fountainhead. In the book like in the movie the main characters are aware of something that everyone else chooses not to see or can't see and are detached from people. That is how I feel until I come across people who can "see" the same things I see.

Im sure what I wrote sounds completely insane...If you think so please move along...nothing to see here. neutral
clever clever quotation - attention getting quote - sad yet witty remark - look at me! Im deep quote- song lyric about my ex cause that bitch stole my mp3 player! - line from movie I liked - Prince lyric - not very clever sig mocking other sigs

Never read The Fountainhead and only know of The Matrix what was told to me by an ex, but I'd say that's a very good analogy.

OK. Here goes.

Yes, I have an inferiority complex about certain kinds of knowlege.

Example:

1) I can't figure out balance sheets in Finance statements. I simply can't figure them out. Buisness Finance is always my worst subject.

2) I can't figure out the rules of sports. I just don't pay attention, so an illegal play can be made in football, hockey, or basketball, and I wouldn't have a clue it was made.

But a few things I never understood why folks couldnt' figure out:

1) Color. I can can mix primary colors of any paint or material and get the correct color I'm looking for. I never understood why people have a tough time figuring out what colors combined make other colors.

2) Inline skating and swimming. I don't understand folks who can't take to those things.

3) hair styles--I don't understand folks who don't listen to their stylist. If your stylist tells you it's time to go with short hair this year, and that long italian mop on top of your head is ruining the otherwise sexy face and distinctive cleft chin, then listen to him/her and get that shit cut!

see, was THAT so hard for you to understand?

Um, I think I can grasp what would make people look nice. I'm good at making people look cute and finding the most beautiful part of them and displaying it.

I'm also good at relating to people and empathizing with them.

I suck at giving good advice, or any advice at all really. I relate but I don't know how to solve problems.

I'm really good at memorazation, and like book smarts, but I have absolutely no common sense.

I'm good at making things look pretty, and I like pretty stuff.

I'm also good at taking the fall for other people. I'll make myself look like an idiot, just so someone else won't have to.

And this totally isn't what the thread was about, is it?

How 'bout how do you think people percieve you?

I think people see me as weak, and dumb.

I'm a little weak, but I'm not dumb. I just don't care to know about stuff I have no interest in. Some people call this ignorance, I just call it conservation.

I can grasp artistic concepts, and get carried away with imposing meaning onto things that really are meaningless, just because they interest me. Abstract ideas that suggest something rather than spell it out clearly. There's logic and then there's the absurd or surreal,(trying to think of a better word) which interests me. I like images, and I like to be presented with things that dont make sense until you stop asking questions and accept the (whichever artists it is) vision. Like suspending your beliefs for a moment so you can understand or try to comprehend it. But sometimes things dont make sense and I accept that as an idea. I'm rambling. I dont see any of it as anything special, I see it as something anyone who is interested in art does.

Alternately, do you often get worried because you can't grasp certain ideas that seem like second nature to most everyone else you know?

Not seeing the whole picture but focusing on the detail and losing sight of the overall idea, or whatever it is.

What is it that you feel is so hard for others to grasp and what is it that is so hard for you to grasp?

Behaviour, lots of things..theres too much out there.

God knows.

lol I'll hire you. I am not making this up: I got a voicemail from my manager to come speak with her in her office. When I had a minute, I headed in, and she closed the door behind me. The conversation:

Her: Jana! Thanks for coming in.

Me: No problem. Sorry about the delay; I'm answering the group voicemail and didn't get to mine until afterward.

Her: Okay. I have something to say about you! Oh, wait...y'know, never mind!

Me: {completely fucking confused) Uh, please, let me hear it!

Her: No, I really won't...no.

Me: Really, please Deborah! Is it bad? What happened?

Her: No, I just, I'm sorry.

Me: Please, don't worry. I've GOT to know!

Her: Well, I just wanted to say...you've got beautiful eyes! Your whole face is gorgeous, and you..

Me: (I've got the WTF face at this point)

Her: You RUIN it with that dark eyeshadow!

Me: (laughing) Christ, I thought this was about WORK! What a relief.

Her: Listen, I was in a beauty pageant

Me: (still laughing)

Her: NO! It was a SCHOLARSHIP PAGEANT. For college. "Miss USA".

Me: You're kidding me. My stepsister's in the same pageant. It's really for a scholarship? I'm not sure that even SHE knows that.

Her: Macy's has free makeovers Jana. I know a girl who works there. the key is asking for a "seasoned" makeup expert.

Me: Boy. I guess I'll admit I never really picked up on the whole "makeup" and "beauty" thing. I was raised by my dad, whom when I was eight, decided to give me a haircut while my hair was in a French braid.

I'm in an odd state right now. Should I feel offended, horrified, thankful...?! falloff What the FUCK. This just happened about 15 minutes ago.

I might as well answer my own questions:

Do you often get the feeling that you can easily understand certain things that few other people can?

I grew up feeling that way, though I think it was only part true and part due to growing up unusually isolated. I had a lot of time to myself as a kid and I became a real individual, which in some ways was good and in some ways not so much.

Alternately, do you often get worried because you can't grasp certain ideas that seem like second nature to most everyone else you know?

Yup. Some simple tasks I just cannot grasp, and I don't know why. .And some things, like learning how to play guitar or learning a new language, are very difficult for me to learn. When I see others doing these things with ease, I wonder what it is that I lack that makes it so easy for them.

Intellectually, too...when I feel dwarfed around someone who's just a complete uber-egghead, I wonder what it is that I missed that they were able to access. Part of me feels like, well, I can understand the CONCEPTS they're talking about, but I can't come close to articulating myself as well as they can, and I don't have the book-smarts they have. I don't feel completely alienated, but I feel like there's a whole world of understanding I haven't even touched. It's both frustrating and kind of inspiring, I suppose.

What is it that you feel is so hard for others to grasp and what is it that is so hard for you to grasp?

I think it's hard for people to grasp that there is a reality that is relevant beyond the given moment. I feel like people all too often want to cram everything into one snapshot or blink in time, and say that "this is everything in the universe, and we must invest completely in THIS moment, and we will judge everything that comes after on THIS single frame of film." And I know, "carpe diem", "live for the moment", blah blah blah, but I think there's something to be said for realizing that right now - right this second - does not have to dictate what the next moment will be like. In fact, that knowledge helps keep me MORE in the moment, I think. It helps me accept what each moment brings. And that seems like a simple philosophy...though I don't think a lot of people get that.

And what I don't get? Hmm. Maybe it's tied in, but I think I'm poor at dealing with chaos. I can't live in the eye of a hurricane, and I know so many people who EXCEL in chaos. I don't know if this is a good or a bad thing. I need some kind of order or some kind of linear SOMEthing to get me through. I sometimes envy people who can go through life with no rhyme or reason to anything they do. Rock on.

What would be the ratio between your rare knowledge and your rare ignorance?

Lotsa ignorance vs. a speck or two of knowledge.

Why am I asking such weird-ass questions?

Usually if something rings a faint bell of interest, I'll just assume that one day when I'm ready to dive into it, I will. I try not to pressure myself into getting interested in things that don't move me now. I've revisited a lot of things I simply couldn't appreciate when I was younger. I think I'm going to keep doing that as I get older. There's plenty of time to check stuff out.

My view is that life is short and you cannot possibly do it all; so you might as well spend as much time as you can doing things that make you happy. If that doesn't conform to other people's ideas about what you should be doing, I think it was Socrates who said, "Fuck 'em". razz

I have to remind myself to be that way about music. Sometimes I feel almost panicked at everything I'm missing in a given moment, especially when I'm listening to Parade for the trillionth time.

But generally, I'm pretty ok with all of the shit that I don't know because I don't currently care.

I guess I've gone through most of my life kinda feeling like an old soul. I have an easy time reading people, to a point that it's almost kinda woo-woo-creepy on some level. And if you have an easy time reading people, well. . . it makes you function really differently in the world. When people find it hard to hide from you, but they don't necessarily know it, it really changes communication. It's sort of vague, but it is an additional layer of knowledge.

As for what I don't grasp easily, I'm with you on languages and guitar. Guitar specifically. Like, I suck at all languages (including English. . . lol . . . really, considering what a reader I've been, I should have a better vocabulary), but most instruments I have an easy time picking up and doing something relatively melodic with. Guitar? No clue. It's mind-bending to me that it's such a popular instrument with casual musicians. I can't do anything with it.

Between knowledge and ignorance, well, I've got vasly more ignorance. Between RARE knowledge and RARE ignorance. . . probably pretty balanced.

You ask weird questions 'cause you're weird.
