The Stanley Hotel (NOT featured in the film The Shining. Sorry!)

I have the opportunity of staying for a few days next spring at the Stanley Hotel in Colorado.

This hotel was featured in the 1980 Kubrick horror film "The Shining", and is notorious for its numerous accounts of alleged paranormal activity - which is precisely why I'm quite interested in staying there! biggrin

Has anyone ever been a guest at the Stanley and, if so, did you experience any ghosts or ghoulies or any general spookiness whatsoever?

It seems we are both in error. I checked and discovered that the exterior shots in the Kubrick film were of the Timberland Hotel in Oregon. The made-for-television version was filmed at the Stanley, and it was at the Stanley Hotel that Stephen King got the inspiration for his novel.

on The Shining (1979):

The Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood in Oregon was used for the front exterior, but all the interiors as well as the back of the hotel were specially built at Elstree Studios in London, England.

Oh, indeed I will! There will be many cameras and other sophisticated recording devices on hand, as some of the team from the SciFi program 'Ghost Hunters' will be there as well.

actually, was the Stephen King (horrible) tel-movie filmed there? It looks like that one. King should really stay away from the film set... or the screenplay... stick to the novels!

Estes Park is beautiful.

It is surrounded by Rocky Mountain National Park, and Roosevelt National Forest.

Lots of wildlife. And, if you feel like taking a drive Trail Ridge Road is beautiful (if it is open for traffic)

You might even see one of these.

One of the Star Wars Insider magazines from a few years back had a story in it told by Anthony Daniels (C-3PO). Lucas was filming parts of "The Empire Strikes Back" at Elstree and Daniels went for a walk between scenes or something like that. He ended up finding the "Shining" set with the hotel's maze and started walking through it. He got a ways into it when he realized that he was making footprints in the "snow", so he backed himself out of the set in very much the same fashion as the character of Danny in the movie, not knowing that that's how it would be done. razz
