Crispin Glover was on Adam Carrolla this morning. He's such a kook! He's made a movie cast entirely with actors with Down's Syndrome, but the movie isn't about Down's Syndrome.
They also replayed his incident on David Letterman where he nearly kicked Dave in the face and challenged him to an arm wrestle (he neither confirms nor denies that this was actually him). I remember that very well. I can't believe it was 20 years ago! They played his spooky version of These Boots Are Made for Walking. George McFly has nothing on this guy! My Legacy

i saw him read from his books in person, saw his movie and met him last month. he's actually a very sweet person, and SUPER appreciative of his fans. though the "persona" he does...i'm convinced it's not an act. that's HIM.

I don't think it's entirely a persona, but he did admit that his desire as anartist is simply to get people to think. To me this says that he knows he's being confusing, and he doesn't want to be run of the mill.
This is not an insult in the least, however. I'm very grateful people like him exist. He was also laughing at himself and acknowledging his oddness. A cool, very interesting person. My Legacy

I think that's great. Do you think that their entire lives revolve around the fact that they have Down's? That might be part of the point he wanted to make. The Normal Whores Club

Right, it could be only incidental to the movie that they have it. I guess I heard it as they weren't playing characters with down's syndrome (rather they just had a certain quality as actors that he liked, so he used them exclusively), but that's probably not the case. I'd be interested in learning more about it in any case. when he screened it here in chicago, he talked about it afterwards. and he talked. and talked. and talked. and talked. and talked about it. the dude seriously needs an internal editor, cuz he will go ON AND ON. but it was crispin, and it just meant i got to look at him longer. ANYhoo, the film did not feel exploitive of the downs syndrome actors at all. it was incredibly surreal and abstruse and intentionally offensive, but the buttons glover pushes in his film are there for a purpose, and it's not to hurt any group of people or to "make fun" of anyone. in his explanation, crispin said that mainstream film studios go to such ridiculous extremes to delete ANY taboo content from movies before we see them, that he wanted to make a film that was 100% taboo, because he believes that a society that views its taboos thinks about them and talks about them, and that's ultimately a good thing. he also said he loved working with a cast of actors who have downs syndrome because they brought a playfulness and a spontaneity to the performances, plus they weren't 'self-conscious' about performing in an avant-garde film.
