In memoriam...my grandfather

http://en.wikipedia.org/w...De_Coninck

My grandfather is dying at the moment. The nurses are giving him more morphine to end the painful life he's been leading for a far too long time. I saw him yesterday. I'm not there at the moment, but alone at my apartment, and feeling the pain really hard...

small update: ... Victor (that was his name during WW II) is still fighting for his life... I don't know how long it will take. Small update...

The morphine isn't given yet. The doctor will come in an hour and decide what to do. My mum gave me wrong information in her distress.

I'm planning on going tomorrow, if he's still alive by then.

My boyfriend is sitting by his side at the moment. For those who know about the troubles I'm having with Francisco, I just want you to know how I'm so grateful to him for doing this right now. I didn't foresee him getting emotionally involved like this, and my heart feels better if I think about it.

And I'm grateful to you for supporting me like that.

It's a very natural thing, but the sad thing is that it takes so much time. He's suffering way too much...

Last update: He died this night. Thank you again for all the support...

For those who understand Dutch...here's an old fragment he wrote. He has written many books as well.

http://www.verzet.org/ind...ew/731/38/

He is/was a great man. He fought in the Spanish Civil war, fell in love with a beautiful Jewish woman during World War II, took care of her two kids (father had been executed) and made another two with her. The youngest is my mother.

After the war he became the national secretary of the communist party. He has met Gorbatsjov, Arrafat, Castro, and many more...

But next to all that, he is a small man with a heart of gold and a great narrator. I had two houses as a kid, the second one was theirs.

He's the oldest one of my grandparents but the last to survive. He's 91 now.

smile What a wonderful, long, full life he's had! He has accomplished more in his years than most people can hope...you're very lucky to have had him in your life...three of my grandparents were killed in horrible accidents when my parents were young...I never got to meet them. He must share so much with you smile thanks for sharing him with us. hug

I'm so sorry for your pain. If it helps, I just read this book about near-death experiences, and the people all explained how, while they were temporarily passed away, they felt nothing but the utmost comfort and love in the "next stage." So I think your grandfather has a lot to look forward to, even though it hurts now.

Just remember to take it one day at a time. Cry as much as you need to, do the things that always made you happy, and take comfort in the people who love and care about you. You'll get through this. You won't get over it, but you'll get through it.
The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I can tell that you two are close, and I'm sure he can feel it too. If it has to happen, I can't imagine a better way to go than in the presence of so much love.
