But I just watched that scene and left my head scratching. Basically it's an amatuer episode of MTV (Condemned) Cribs with people screaming in the background. no matter how many times I read this post I keep seeing "creamed corn" in there! are you trying to give me some kind of subliminal message? Yeah, the movie didn't do much for me. I really, really wanted to be scared by it since I'd heard such good things, but it just wasn't happening. Just a bunch of endless scenes of characters screaming at each other and complaining.
The ending almost made up for things though. Definitely the best moment in the film. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I'll take "Aliens" 1,2,3, anyday. When Sigourney Weaver is in her chair singing "you are my lucky star" and the creature is sneaking up behind her....or in 2 when they're in the abandoned colony and all the creatures are coming out of the wall and they can't shoot...I'm due for my 50th re-watch.

I loved Blair Witch because it let my imagination do all the scaring, and no one knows how to scare me better than myself.
If you're someone with a vivid imagination, this movie is terrifying. It's like reading a scary novel (which is always scarier than a movie, imo), you get to imagine the worst thing you can think of.

utter genius, a completely revolutionary horror film. Scary as fuck. This debate reminds me of all the people who feel that The Exorcist is not scary at all. that one was revolutionary in it's time as well.
I saw it at a free sneak preview at a small arthouse theatre BEFORE it got picked up for major distribution. Had no idea and had low expectations. So skillful at weaving what abstract horror enters your mind when you are out in the woods or some supposedly haunted house with friends in the dead of night. It picks out REALISTIC impressions of paranoia and terror. And it threw out all the cliche trappings that have become the force fed vocabulary of conventional horror movies. LOve it! It was totally overhyped which kinda spoilt it, but I still think it's a good little movie. The Last Broadcast was really similar and came out just before I think. it hardly got any hype (at least in the UK) and wasn't as good as Blair Witch but I really enjoyed it just because it felt like i'd kind of discovered something out of the mainstream.
And whoever said The Thing is the best horror is right on the button - might not be scary in the spooky kind of way, but this has to be the most tense scene in any "horror" movie: http://www.youtube.com/wa...7Q-5VSqzEk All those who believe in telekinetics, raise my hand...

I haven't found anything in cinema or on TV scary for years. It's all way too predictable and stuffed with clichés. I like this ending, but I remember not finding it very scary even back then. But it it effective, IMO.
The worst thing though, is a woman, alone in a house, going into the bathroom, infront of the basin, closing the mirror door of the closet, and then BUH!, there's someone behind. Or even worse, BUH!, there's no one behind her. Look how incredibly creative we are.

Watching the last few minutes without seeing all that lead up to it, of course it's not scary. It was all about the psychological space the movie got you into up to that point. Walking through the woods at night isn't inherently scary, but if you're telling ghost stories al night with friends that take place in the woods and then try walking through the woods at night, see how different you feel. And yes, that was the scary part, seeing him turned into the corner cause then you knew they'd found what they feared most, cause they'd heard that part of the tale. |

I don't get it.
I have a vague memory of seeing this in the theater after having smoked a joint, and I was still just as confused. It was a little freaky at the time I guess, but I didn't "get" it. "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

Speaking of having the crap scared out of you though, I just finished reading "The Shining" again recently. I hadn't read it in years and it is, by far, the scariest story I've ever read.
I was too scared to even get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. The book is far more detailed and scary than the movie, which Stephen King didn't like in the first place. He thought they botched the whole thing (which they did if you read the book) and that Jack Nicholson played Jack Torrance all wrong from the beginning, which he did. Having said that, the moive is STILL scary anyway, and I think it's mostly because of the music actually. But damn, that book. It's so much more detailed with a heavy influence on Jack and Wendy's marriage and Danny's "friend" Tony, and the history of the Overlook itself. The whole build-up even to the half-way point of the book is just creepy as hell. I really enjoyed Blair Witch, but the movie didn't work well or have the same impact watching it in a theater full of people. Plus seeing on a big screen gave me motion sickness.
If you forget about the hype and press surrounding it, and just look at it as a home movie of some sort, and watch it on a regular TV set alone, it is really spooky. It's almost like stumbling across footage of someone's death on tape.
