I can tell you that losing the weight was far harder than quitting smoking.

Interesting; I didn't start working out 'til I was in my mid-twenties, but I took to that like a fish to water. Smoking, on the other hand, was a bitch! I'd go for a hardcore workout and then light up outside the gym. lol

i've seen people put their cigs out by the ENTRANCE of my gym before they walk in! that takes balls!

Some buddies of mine and I used to go inline skating alot around base (there were some neat semi-abaondoned parts of base that you coudl do tricks in, etc.).

Half the time, we'd come up with the idea to go skating once we were good and drunk falloff

my major problem I have with smokers is it appears they feel they have the right to litter. Oh and smoking at the entrance of buildings.

lol There was this woman I worked with a long time ago with HUGE hair, fake and bake tan, fingernails like talons and skinny skinny skinny. She smoked like a chimney and hardly ate and addictively used her StairMaster at home. I really don't think she saw the irony of it all. I loved that woman. lol

oh, i certainly have my share of ugly vices, but either they're well hidden or else i keep the severity of my indulgences relative to my means as some weird kind of survival mechanism. i grew up an only child of a single parent who was not often well, so i grew up with little other option than to take care of myself. i guess as an adult, that preservation mechanism is still in place. it's not that i don't let myself indulge or have fun (sometimes too much) - but i'm a total control freak about the quality of my life. i'd never let myself go under.

Makes complete sense. nod

Are you able to have some compassion about it when you see others struggling with it? Do you think your own story of how you changed gives you incentive to judge others?

I never was into the coffee either, was a very moderate drinker and gambling held zero interest for me. I focused most of my energy on chain smoking and trying to filet skinny chicks. biggrin

These days, I'm what I guess the kids would call "straight-edge". shrug I will not be buying any Minor Threat records in the near future, however. razz

Hey, thanks! batting eyes

I was on my way back to the clinic after a home visit with a pregnant 19 yr old this morning, and for whatever reason, I was thinking about how easy it is to expect others to "get over", or do, what we've managed to do ourselves. And I was thinking how easy it is to forget the time B.C. (Before Change, heh) and how easy it is to think that everyone can and SHOULD change, since we did, and in the same amount of time, in the same way, etc.

Then I came home for lunch and saw some threads and posts from people who'd been through some transformation, yet had a hard time accepting where people are at in their own process.

All in all, it's a complex issue. Just thought I'd throw my driving thoughts out there and hope to get even more food for thought from you all.

You should read Ann Magnuson's piece about overcoming her bad boy addiction. Was published in Details before that magazine started sucking it.

Yes, I have compassion for others that are where I used to be, expecially if they are young. I definitely understand the appeal of the ba boy.
