nevermind. he was good looking, but not better looking than Brando. [Edited 11/17/06 5:10am] I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

for the time, sure. i don't think guys were encouraged to look like he did. the idea of sexualizing men wasn't really what it is today. i think he's still praised as an icon because he was one of the first media stars to represent men as sexual objects, and not just as stylish or dapper or some kind of rigid conservative standard of masculinity.
or maybe he just had a big unit and everyone knew it.

He's good looking, but definitely not what I would call hot.

He was really good in carving out an image for himself, one that still works today.

He was very attractive to me in that very hurt/abandoned/didn't know he was beautiful kinda way. I felt the same way about Kurt Cobain....is that weird. I'm a sucker for someone that looks like they need to be saved.....

M Not weird at all. For thousands of years (and still today), people have found that attractive in women, and maybe I'm wrong, but it only seems in the 20th century and beyond we've found that attractive in men. But regardless, its a fairly prevelent notion that people become more attractive the more they ride on the brink of downfall. Just be careful not to slip over the edge. Unless of course you die horribly in an accident, OD or commit suicide. Then you'll be elevated to a god. |

For a long time I thought he was just a "good looking guy," but he's a pretty good actor, and pretty cool. Couple that with dying young, and there's your icon.
I know women who think Tony Soprano is sexy, so I'm sure James Dean is handsome enough! My Legacy

he was magnetically arresting in intensity on film, similar to Brando (he was actually idolizing Brando)!
I can't think of someone more recently that has that gravity and mystique except for maybe Angeline Jolie in "Girl Interrupted" and that was not quite as powerful. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

I think that part of his appeal was that he was part of a new generation of actors who played "real" and raw rather than the starched machismo evident in movies before the mid-50's.
His characters were flawed, rebelious, naive and brooding. Simultaneously you could want to slap him and hug him. I thought he was an amazing actor for his time but you have to view his achievements in context. In context, he was hot
