So over the last few days I've been slipping back into old habits. The beginning of my seasonal affective disorder kicking in full force, I think I've been looking for comfort.
Trouble is, I'm not finding it where I thought I would. I made myself a platter of junk food last night for dinner. And it tasted awful and made me feel sick.
So tonight I decided I'd try smoking again. So I just walked to the store and bought a pack of cigarettes. After a few puffs, I was utterly disgusted. It made me feel dizzy and nauseous. Put it out, and came inside.

sigh

I suppose (ok, I know) it's for the best. It just feels like I don't have anything left.

So what do you do? Where do you find your comfort? What do you do when the old tricks aren't working anymore?

Treat yourself to an indulgent, but healthier activity as a substitute.

If you don't already belong to a gym, buy a day pass to a really luxurious one (usually $10-$20). Or if you live in a larger city, check to see if there are sauna houses available like The Turkish Bath House in Miami Beach....those places are awesome and have a zillion steam rooms, hot and cold water therapy, some rooms w aromathery and deck chairs or relaxing room for reading. Sometimes a pool...

...but if only a gym's available you can sweat your troubles out in a regular sauna. Maybe go hit the treadmill first, with your headphones and favorite music playing that expresses all the brou-haha running through your mind and bothering you lately. Whatever the feelings are. Just choose music that's honestly expressing how you feel and watch your self sort of walk your troubles off for maybe a solid hour. Your legs will feel like jelly afterwards, but you'll adjust. After that, hit the steam room and sweat all those yuchy physical (and a few emotional !) toxins out of your body.

Afterwards go home indulge in takeout of some miso soup or a nice bowl of brothy noodles, or maybe a premade food treat from your local Wild Oats/Whole Foods or other health market. If you don't want to spend too much money on takeout, then honey, you'd be surprised how well a pack of Ramen Noodles clean up when you add fresh ginger, a chopped scallion, fresh cilantro, and an egg/chopped chiken breast. If you're the spicy type then add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a tiny bit of sliced red chili.

Then put an uplifting or your favorite movie in your DVD, sit your ass down with a pot of hot tea (non-caffeine) and lull yourself to sleep afterwards
cool. Be careful with too much caffeine intake because not only does it get people revved up and prone to reach for things to calm down, but it's also an appetite stimulant. Now might be a good time to switch to herbal tea, and I've heard that they've started selling Rooibos tea in the US now. Rooibus is an African tea with neat health benefits (anti nervousness, anti-constipation, anti-colloc, anti-oxidant) without caffeine. If you're a coffee drinker, you could always switch to CARO coffee, made from wheat, and I think distributed at home by the Nestlé company...hope this sounds interesting cool!

Some lovely suggestions!

I belong to a gym, I go twice a week, but maybe that's just not enough. I've never stepped in the sauna, maybe I will try that this week. smile

I'm actually quite caffeine sensitive, so my intake of caffeine is severely limited (especially in comparison to most americans). The tea sounds lovely. I will look for it. Thanks! biggrin

Exercise. Join a gym if you haven't yet, or take a class of some sort....it sucks to get there but once you do and you finish you feel better. Not to mention the nice changes you see in your body after 3-4 weeks.

Everyone skips exercise because we're lazy. Push yourself and do it and you'll feel better.

Tantric masturbation is what you need to be doing.

It's best if you can make it last for half an hour, but just be careful as the lack of blood to your brain can make you hallucinate and you can end up shagging pieces of furniture.

I make ear-shattering post-industrial noise music with my amplifiers, feedbacking microphones and by abusing computer programs.

You should try it. That usually does it for me.

My favoritie is to buy some fresh ginger, peel it, slice it, and boil into a tea.

It relaxes, and calms me.
