Seahawks vs. Rams - Game Preview
SEAHAWKS vs. RAMS GAME AT A GLANCE The Seahawks (5-3) will look to extend their NFC West lead and a 10-game winning streak versus the division this week when they take on the Rams (4-4) at Qwest Field. Kickoff is set for 1:15 p.m. (PT). Seattle comes into this week having shutout the Oakland Raiders 16-0 on Monday Night Football, while the Rams dropped a 31-17 decision to the Kansas City Chiefs. A win this week would give the Seahawks a two-game lead in the division, including the tie breaker over the Rams. This week’s game pits the two winningest teams in the division since realignment in 2002. Seattle boasts the top mark with a 43-28 record (.606), followed by St. Louis’ 37-35 record (.514). Seattle has won the last two division crowns, with St. Louis winning in 2003. San Francisco is 26-46 (.361) while Arizona is 21-51 (.292). This will be the 17th regular-season meeting between the two teams, with the Rams leading 9-7 in those games. Seattle is looking for their fourth consecutive win over St. Louis and 10th consecutive regular-season NFC West victory after winning 30-28 at St. Louis on October 15. In that game, Seattle overcame a 21-7 halftime deficit to win the game, and used two 49-yard, fourth-quarter field goals by Josh Brown and a 54-yard field goal as time expired to win the game. Seattle is 0-1 against the Rams in the postseason, dropping a 2004 Wild Card game 27-20 in Seattle on January 8, 2005. Last season, Seattle swept both games played between the two division rivals - winning 37-31 in a shootout in St. Louis on October 9, and then winning 31-16 at Qwest Field in Seattle on November 13. Seattle’s last three wins avenged three losses to St. Louis in 2004, including the Wild Card Playoff matchup in Seattle. The Seahawks are 4-4 against the Rams in games played in Seattle. Date: Sunday, November 12 Kickoff: 1:00 pm PT Record: Seahawks 5-3 Rams 4-4 Series: Rams lead 9-7 TV: FOX (Channel 13 in Seattle) Matt Vasgersian (play-by-play) J.C. NFL Preview: St. Louis at Seattle
NFL.com wire reports (Nov. 8, 2006) -- A crack in Shaun Alexander 's left foot still hasn't healed and Matt Hasselbeck 's right knee remains a problem, but there's nothing wrong with Josh Brown 's leg. With Alexander and Hasselbeck expected to miss another game, the Seattle Seahawks face the St. Louis Rams in their first meeting since Brown's kicking decided the teams' meeting last month. Alexander, the league's reigning MVP, will almost certainly miss his sixth consecutive game when Seattle (5-3) hosts St. Louis (4-4) in a showdown for the NFC West lead. Hasselbeck, who threw three touchdowns with no interceptions in a 30-28 win over the Rams on Oct. 15, isn't expected to play, either. Seattle is hoping both players will return Nov. 19 at San Francisco. The Seahawks are 2-3 without Alexander and 1-1 since Hasselbeck's strong game against St. Louis, when Brown kicked a 54-yard field goal as time expired to win it. Brown had three field goals in the fourth quarter of that game, and made another three in a 16-0 home win over Oakland on Monday night as the Seahawks snapped a two-game losing streak. Despite injuries and inconsistent play, Seattle remains atop the division. The Seahawks have just two games remaining against teams with winning records: Dec. 3 at Denver and Dec. 24 at home against San Diego. "The fact we're 5-3 at the halfway mark, considering we've been a little unlucky in the injury department, I think is OK," Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren said. "Now hopefully we start getting some guys back for the stretch. "Honestly, our expectation level was higher. But sometimes seasons don't unfold exactly the way you hoped." The urgency to get back Alexander and Hasselbeck back quickly lessened somewhat when the Rams lost 31-17 to Kansas City and the Seahawks ran for a season-high 207 yards against Oakland. Alexander's replacement, Maurice Morris, set career highs with 30 carries for 138 yards. St. Louis' loss to Seattle snapped a three-game winning streak and began its current three-game skid. The Rams beat Arizona, Detroit and Green Bay -- who have a combined 6-18 record -- before faltering against the Seahawks, San Diego and Kansas City -- a combined 16-8. St Louis is hoping to get out of this three-game slide when he faces the Seahawks. The Rams will get an immediate opportunity to regain ground. "Let's get ourselves ready to play probably the most important division game of the year so far, based on where our division is at," St. Louis coach Scott Linehan said. "Let's take care of business, and by performing well and winning this game we can certainly put ourselves back in very good position." Veteran players can remember worse situations. Last year's team also was 4-4, but won only twice the rest of the way. "We're struggling now, but I've been on a couple of bad teams around here that have had multiple injuries and collapsed on itself," Rams quarterback Marc Bulger said. "We're nowhere near that. We have so many good players, too much character." St. Louis is fourth in the NFL in total offense at 366.9 yards per game. Steven Jackson caught a career-high 13 passes and had a combined 219 yards rushing and receiving against the Chiefs. Bulger passed for 354 yards, the fifth time in six games he has topped 300. The Rams, though, are 27th in total defense at 346.5 yards per game. They are short-handed on the line after trading end Anthony Hargrove a few weeks after he skipped two days of practice, with rookie fourth-round pick Victor Adeyanju inheriting the starting spot. Jimmy Kennedy is adjusting to a new role as the nose tackle. Defensive coordinator Jim Haslett said there is currently a lack of trust that the man next to you is going to do his job. "Everybody has to have an understanding of where everybody fits on the run game, and you'd better have a trust that the guy that is going to be in that spot is going to be there," Haslett said. "Right now, I don't think we are real good on that." St. Louis has lost three straight to Seattle since a 23-12 home win Nov. 14, 2004. INJURIES: St Louis QUESTIONABLE: OLB Pisa Tinoisamoa (Hand) PROBABLE: SS Jerome Carter (Elbow) OLB Isaiah Kacyvenski (Hip) DE Leonard Little (Knee) INJURIES: Seattle OUT: OLB D.D. Wallace has Rams worried Seneca Wallace Seattle’s mobile QB just another headache for St. Louis
by DARRIN BEENE When you play 11 games in five years, as the Seattle Seahawks and the St. Louis Rams have done, there aren’t too many secrets left. Sunday’s game at Qwest Field, however, will be the first one started by a Seahawks quarterback other than Matt Hasselbeck since the first time these teams met as NFC West rivals in 2002. Seneca Wallace makes his third career start and gives St. Louis a new look. What Wallace lacks in experience he makes up for in mobility. He scrambled for 37 yards – the longest by a Seahawks player this season – in Monday’s win over Oakland. He has run for 71 yards and presents the Rams defense with something else to worry about. Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren offered a sly smile when asked if he’s going to exploit his “secret weapon.” “Yeah, we might have a few extra things at the end of this week,” Holmgren said. “I hadn’t thought of that. I’m glad you brought it up.” Rams coach Scott Linehan has thought about it a lot. Based on what he’s seen on film, he expects Seattle to try to take advantage of Wallace’s running ability. “It is harder to prepare for when you have a guy like Seneca who can use his feet to create offense,” Linehan said. “What he is doing a good job of is basically still running the offense and looking to throw first. That is what makes him very effective.” Holmgren, meanwhile, has to balance new plays that might not work against what he knows works against the Rams. “Most of the things you see on the field that I think will work will be the things you’ve seen before,” Holmgren said. “I think most of the time, both teams kind of run the stuff that has worked in the past.” What worked for Seattle in its 30-28 victory against St. Louis was a balanced offense. Though Hasselbeck threw for 268 yards and three scores, the Seahawks also gained 125 yards on the ground, with Maurice Morris picking up 74. Stopping the run may not be the Rams’ strength. In consecutive losses they allowed 183 yards to San Diego’s LaDanian Tomlinson and 172 yards to Kansas City’s Larry Johnson. St. Louis gives up 141.3 rushing yards per game to rank 28th in run defense. Holmgren said in the last game against the Rams he had to remind himself to stick with the run, going so far as to write those words on his flip chart that he carries with him on the sideline. He was able to stick with the run again in Monday’s win over the Raiders and Morris churned out a career-high 138 yards on 30 carries. Can he do it on Sunday vs. the Rams? “If we’re blocking a little bit and Mo is holding up there’s no reason not to do that with him,” Holmgren said. The threat of being ground up by either Morris or Wallace gives Linehan, who has long admired Wallace, quite a challenge. Before the 2003 NFL draft, Linehan was with the Minnesota Vikings and put Wallace through an individual workout. He came away impressed. “The guy is a stud,” Linehan said. “He is just a real creative player.” Wallace’s skills allow Holmgren a chance to experiment. With Wallace getting used to running the offense, there could be more surprises come Sunday. Already Holmgren has given Wallace some more audible possibilities and what he called “movement things.” Wallace said he’s ready to take on more. “I’m comfortable with (the offense),” Wallace said. “We have been doing the same thing we have been doing when Matt was playing. I just have to keep working and keep … getting better.” Seneca Wallace is a great guy and has held up well during his first starts of his career. We are all very proud of him and him very much. Matt practiced today! It's been a couple weeks. But he is on the mend. Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck throws during practice Friday, Nov. 10, 2006. | |
