You know actually it's a valid question. I received a bachelor's and master's in English and wanted to either be a college professor or the next great American writer. I ended up teaching freshmen English to a high school class with LOTS of problems and because my discipline skills were for crap I moved on from the teaching arena. I kept writing though but I could never fully submerge myself in the characters or in the events that they were experiencing. Because I am massively self-absorbed all of my characters sounded too much like me and had too many of my habits. Not being able to lose myself in the world of fiction I did what a lot of people do. I settled. I went back to the college where I got my degree, I got some paper pushing jobs and then 5 years ago I got a job where I have frequent interaction with students. I try to be for them the mentor that I did not really have in school and I use my mistakes as a teaching tool. I do teach Freshmen Skills courses that allow me to be the college professor I always wanted to be, even if it is not in English. My English major helped me foster a deeper appreciation of Shakespeare but also a realization that I prefer reading Entertainment magazine than Hemingway. So it was only a half waste. And the great thing about the Org is I get to attempt to hone my writing skills even though I have come to the realization that I am probably not going to make any money off of them.
