BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN - A review by AB777 I finally saw Brokeback mountain last week. It was a decent movie.
Here’s a couple of opinions I have on the movie. The Movie isn’t really a “gay” movie. What I mean by this is that when I think of a gay movie, I think about “Billy’s Hollywood screen kiss” or “Trick”, or any number of dreadful Eddie Murphy flicks. I saw bits of each movie on HBO and was completely unable to sit through them. They were light, triffle, affairs with little or no emotional impact. There was no reason to care for the characters other than the fact that hey were overly good looking or charming. Brokeback was a different type of film altogether. There are no witty drag queen segues, no gay friendly best female friends with wierd or stupid overly straight boyfriends, no high fashion elements, and no large roomy lofts in which the "struggling" characters somehow live. In fact, about 30 minutes into it, I found myself happy for the characters that they finally “did” it in that tent. The Movie isn’t really sexually explicit – where’s the controversy? When Enis finally pokes the other guy (I forget his name already :lol ) The buttfucking scene isn’t even intense. The extreme cowboy repression is evident in the way in which Enis plows into the other guy, but it’s simply neither shocking enough, nor striking enough to make the movie very controversial. It would have ..ahem.. driven to point home better if the good looking bottom screamed louder or said stuff like, “Oooh. It hurts… It HURTS!!!!”. But none of that took place. The ending of the movie tells us little bout the journey Enis took or must take Yeah, so the other guy dies. And Enis is left to ponder this. But he doesn’t come to any conclusions anymore than he did before the death. There’s no scene in which he finally realizes what he’s lost. No realization that he needs to change. The scene where he hugs the other guy’s shirt is touching, but doesn’t tell us much more than we already knew. The scene in which he agrees to go to his daughter’s wedding is a great step towards him softening up to his daughter, but it isn’t exactly a “coming out” of Enis. Perhaps it was meant to symbolize the fact that he realizes that he needs to appreciate those around him now, else he may live to regret it—I don’t know. Either way, it ended on a disappointing note. Lastly, let me say that I HATE, I mean HATE romance in movies, so the repressed romantic undercurrent was kind of a nice touch for a love story. My favorite scene in the entire movie is when the other guy tells his father-in-law the fuck off about the T.V. being on during thanksgiving dinner. I was totally like sayin, “YOU GO GIRL!!!!!” Anyways, thanks for letting me express my thoughts.

It wasnt that good a movie , I couldnt really see what all the controvery was around to be honest .
Hollywood producers must think that all gay men do is hug The ending was weak The only truly great thing about the movie was the scenery OK so a gay Jake it a dream come true

oh, and i think they tamed down the sex so that people who wandered into it thinking it would be a nice cowboy movie didn't freak out too badly. [Edited 10/18/06 9:49am]

I thought it was great that there was nothing stereo typical about what qualifies as gay in this movie.
I also thought it had a very 70's gay vibe to it too. ..

i liked the movie, but i didn't love it. i thought it was important in that it was about a homosexual relationship, but yeah, it wasn't a "gay" movie like "jeffrey" or "the birdcage" or whatever. it was a first step toward telling stories about human beings whose attraction just so happens to lean in one direction rather than the other. it was the first painstakingly HUMAN story about two guys in love i've ever seen. it's not really a movie that "spoke to me", but as responsible filmmaking goes, i think it was a real breakthrough.
not enough exposed private areas, though.

I also found the entire repression thing with Enis rather scary. There's the closeted homsosexual who has to come to terms gay shame. Then there's the closeted homosexual who basically doesn't want to disrupt his lifestyle (respect at work, social network, etc.), but Enis's form of repression was totally scarrier. He actually thought he would die if he came out. It was a matter of life and death to him. It's sooooo gay-in-Iran. Scary.
You'd think those dumbass small town yahoos would want more gay men in their communities. I mean, when only one in ten women are remotely fuckable, the compeitition can be fierce. As for the whole JerseyKRS blowdryer thing, I have no clue what that is about. But I will say that all the gay men of the org don't fit the "gay cowboy" theme. Rather org gay men are like little girls to me. Cute little queens that like to play dressup and talk about their next concerts. And all the straight org men--well, they're partially gay anyways. We're all a bit girly just for being on a damned Prince website. Even the butch one--JerseyKRS, is really just kind of in to the whole gay bear scene anyways.

Showing Ennis in his small trailer, isolated and alone at the end, was the crux of the movie IMO. It was frightening and sad to think what the rest of his life was going to be like from that point on. I thought Heath nailed that last line in the movie too.
My only gripes with Brokeback were the bad makeup and accents. Jake looked like he had a dead rat glued to his face when he was fighting with Ennis at the end. I dunno, most of the gay movies I've seen always seemed to either dwell on someone getting aids, people partying at nightclubs, prissy queeny characters exchanging witty remarks, yadda yadda yadda. They're almost embarassing to watch. They just seemed to dwell in the here and now, and never really did anything for me. Even watching Harry Hamlin in Making Love seemed corny to me. I thought Brokeback took a more insightful look at the pain the characters were going through, and how they had to deal with their families.

The movie was basically MAURICE.....but with cowboys.
I actually really liked it. I thought Heath was amazing. Justthe thought of Jake being gay puts me on cloud 9. Yes, the movie needed more penis or at least more ass.
