WOLVERINE - THE MOVIE, MAGNETO - THE MOVIE WOLVERINE
Release Date: Summer, 2008 (estimated) Distributor: 20th Century Fox Production Company: Marvel Studios, The Donner Company, Seed Productions (Hugh Jackman's new company) Cast: Hugh Jackman (Logan, AKA Wolverine); other cast not announced yet. Director: Not announced yet Screenwriter: David Benioff (Troy, 25th Hour) Based Upon: (10/6/06) This movie will be based upon the Marvel Comics character, Wolverine, first introduced as a Canadian operative in 1974's 'Incredible Hulk' #181, before more famously joining the mutant superhero team, the X-Men. In movie form, this is of course a spin-off of the hero as played by Hugh Jackman in the 'X-Men' movies. This is just one of a few planned 'X-Men' spin-offs, with the others including a prequel about the young Magneto, and a possible new ensemble mutant 'X-Men 4' project which would focus on the younger members of the team, and other students at Xavier's School for Gifted Students. Villains Notes: (10/6/06) The two villains that seem most likely to appear in this movie, because of their close ties to Wolverine in his solo stories in the comics are Sabretooth (seen in the first 'X-Men' movie, although in this prequel, he may be played by someone other than Tyler Mane) and the Silver Samurai, a Japanese mutant with the ability to charge his sword with a disintegration-like force. Premise: (10/6/06) The details of the premise of this movie aren't known yet, except that it will be a prequel showing what super-healing, adamantium-clawed mutant superhero Wolverine was doing before he joined the 'X-Men' in the first movie. Earlier this summer, there was an online script review of a leaked early draft of the script (since pulled offline), but it's been suggested that the plot of that script may not reflect what the movie is eventually about. Filming: (10/6/06) The current plans for filming are for production to start in late 2007 after Hugh Jackman wraps production on a huge Australian epic being directed by Baz Luhrmann. Genre: Action, Based on a Book, Comic Book, Eye Candy, Science Fiction, Sequel, Superhero MAGNETO Release Date: TBA 2009 (estimated) Release Date Note: (10/6/06) No release date has been announced yet for 'Magneto', but as it is expected to not be made until after Wolverine, which suggests a release in 2009. Distributor: 20th Century Fox Cast: Ian McKellen (Magneto); other cast not announced yet. Cast Notes: (10/6/06) When this project was first announced in 2004, it was believed that a younger actor would be cast as Eric Lansherr in his 20s, but earlier this year, Sir Ian McKellen revealed that he will indeed be starring in this movie, using the wonders of computers to de-age him by about 50 years (source: IGN FilmForce). Director: Not announced yet. Screenwriter: Sheldon Turner ('The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning', 'The Longest Yard') Based Upon: (10/6/06) This movie is based upon the Marvel Comics mutant leader (and villain) first introduced in 1963 in 'Uncanny X-Men' #1 as the leader of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. More directly, this is a spin-off prequel of the popular 'X-Men' movies, in which Magneto was played (brilliantly) by Sir Ian McKellen. This is just one of the planned spin-offs of the 'X-Men' franchise, which includes Wolverine and a possible 'X-Men 4' which would focus on the younger members of the team and other students at Xavier's School. Premise: This movie will focus on the adventures of the young Eric Lensherr, who will someday become a villain called Magneto, who was born with the amazing mutant ability to control magnetism and shape many forms of metals. The movie will be set in the period between 1939 (when Eric was a prisoner at Auschwitz) and 1955, and will include the details of how Magneto first became friends and partners with another powerful mutant, Charles Xavier (who is one of the U.S. soldiers who liberates Eric from the Nazis), and how Eric uses his abilities to track down the former Nazis who killed his parents in the concentration camps. Filming: (10/6/06) There is currently no word on when production of this movie might start, but since it will be made after Wolverine, it probably won't be until 2008 or later. Aside from Spider-man, I've lost faith in Marvel's films. Daredevil, the Punisher, Elektra, X-Men 3, F4, Blade 3 - all sh!t. And I don't have high hopes for Ghost Rider, Iron Man or Sub-Mariner. The suits at Marvel aren't getting the right people to work on their films. | |
