Get out the owner's manuel and look up website for tech support. There's a number you can call. I had problems with my shuffle for 2 months. Purchased the $10 ipod book (helpful section on trouble shooting) and still couldn't fix it. Had to restore it to factory settings and it worked for awhile, then wouldn't download music. It was still under warranty, so I just returned it. Got a new one that's problem free. The tech support is a good start for unsolvable problems.
I bought a charger to plug in the electical outlet. Charges alot faster. I never use the computer to charge my ipods. [Edited 10/16/06 10:03am] [Edited 10/16/06 10:06am]

so, if you're using a laptop and you're using firewire-cable (instead of USB), your iPod won't charge because a laptop firewire-outlet has 2 poles instead of 3 (i.e. a desktop computer). The third pole is the one that charges your iPod.

That's kind of odd, because USB can provide power to devices as well. I've had a similar problem happen when I left my digital cameras connected to the computer via USB, the batteries would drain faster. I think it's because the camera (or IPod in this case maybe) remains on the whole time, communicating with the computer, and instead of pulling the power from the USB maybe it continues to take it from the battery instead? Just a guess.

I use one of these
The iPod Dock Connector to FireWire and USB 2.0 Cable offers up to 480Mbps data transfer for quickly loading an entire music library on iPod or iPod mini. Connect the FireWire cable up to the iPod or iPod mini power adapter to charge while syncing. Compatible with iPod models with Dock Connector.

I just got my iPod a couple weeks ago, and 80G anywho I noticed that too if you leave it plugged in the usb it drains the battery. I later figured out you have to shut the iPod off in order for it to charge and not drain the battery ..

So, it's the iPod that is losing charge?
How old is it? The batteries do eventually go. Is there an Apple Store near you? You can go there and they will help you. oh noes, prince is gonna soo me!!1!

Then you can spend a lot of money having the battery replaced, or you can buy a new one. It's the curse of the rechargable battery: they all stop working eventually. oh noes, prince is gonna soo me!!1!
