ok this may be TMI but I was diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome many years ago and I had a friend who was Asian and I SWEAR her mom told me the same thing, that I needed to squat while I defecated
she told me that my insides were all crooked and I needed to squat to go correctly. Of course I didn't listen but this is a trip that I read this years later and it says the same thing  .
sometimes when I get really bad cramps though I do put my head down like that and it does ease the cramping  I guess we shouldn't knock it if we don't try it

One thing I hate about traveling in this country is when I come across a smelly, dirty squat toilet. My body's pretty much conditioned not to go when I'm traveling to avoid them. It's a miracle when you find a 'normal' clean toilet.
