The only problem I have with it is the lack of consistency in Hollywood and historical depictions of people. I remember the big stink that was caused when they wanted to erect a statute of multiracial/cultural firemen instead of using the accurate depiction of all white firemen who held the the flag aloft after 9/11. Now that shit was criticized like hell and they scrapped it, saying it was not "historically accurate". It just amazes how this doesn't cut both ways. Then again, no one was outraged by the laughable accuracy of the Passion of the Christ so I don't think anyone will care about this either. Ironically if the Passion had been more accurate, there would have been outrage. Anyway, I know Hollywood is about bottom line which equals appealing to the "mainstream" with a "mainstream" star and that is fueling the decision, so this is pointless.
But for fun lets consider the following:

i was outraged by the innacuracies made to demonize the jews in the passion at the time and still am. the sad part is those who the movie plays to don't even know they are inaccuracies. the people i debated about it with in p&r thought it was completely biblically sourced. i was outraged by the innacuracies made to demonize the jews in the passion at the time and still am. the sad part is those who the movie plays to don't even know they are inaccuracies. the people i debated about it with in p&r thought it was completely biblically sourced. Outside of the jews, most people didn't notice the other obvious omissions and blatant inaccuracies. Then again that's the movies for you. Reminds me of a biracial friend of mine, she's German and Polish... Actually Angelina is part Indian (Iroquois) on her Mother's side. I know, Iroquois is a not one tribe of Indians but actually a group of six tribes (MOHAWK, ONEIDA, ONONDAGA, CAYUGA, SENECA, TUSCARORA). "Always blessings, never losses......"

if a film is made about the life of a gay person, is it right for a straight person to play that part? how could a straight actor possibly know what it's like to live as a gay person? if it's insulting for an actor of one experience to portray a character of another experience, should we do away with acting altogether? maybe we should ban anything that isn't reality programming. Good points, but you forgot that this movie (not a theatrical or live stage performance)is the biographical portrayal of a real life bi-racial/Black woman. So go over to the Prince forum next time there's a "Who should Play Prince in the Movie" thread and mention the name of somebody that ain't Black and see what happens. Like T-bare and others have implied...at least get somebody that physically resembles the person. Wait, doesn't Dave Navarro look kinda like Prince?

This whole argument reminds me of when they cast Jennifer Lopez as Selena.
Many Mexicans were outraged that a Puerto Rican actress was cast in the role. Well Jennifer Lopez looks very similar to Selena, had her mannerisms down pat, and did a very good job at portraying her. "Always blessings, never losses......"

I know the issues of employment for black actresses and acurate portrayals in movies, but I believe in this case it is simply Brad Pitt giving a job to his woman, plain and simple. "Always blessings, never losses......"

I was reading about this another site, and people were commenting that a Latina should play the role of Mariane, because she is half Afro-Cuban (and half Dutch). They felt that her Cuban roots should have opened up a spot for a Latina. To be honest, I think they should have picked whoever could resemble Mariane (which may or may not be Angelina, but it's too late now), not just someone who has the same heritage. I also read that Mariane is Buddhist, so she may have been pleased with Angelina's interest in Buddhism.
