TORONTO (CP) - Dave Pye moved to Boston from Ottawa in the late 1980s. But his fondness for the country he left behind is such that he's bestowed a gift upon many of his American friends: a passion for "The Trailer Park Boys," the television show-turned-feature film that follows a trio of Nova Scotia misfits.

"I've had Trailer Park Boys parties where we watch the DVDs, eat chicken wings and pepperoni, drink rum and Cokes and boil up some Swiss Chalet sauce," Pye, 32, a marketing consultant, said Tuesday from Boston.

"A friend and I went out for Halloween dressed as Ricky and Julian. Nobody had a clue who we were, but we had fun. I have lots of friends down here who I've converted."

Sean Carney, 40, has often partied at Pye's Trailer Park Boys get-togethers.

"There is just something so funny and so embarrassing about it, but it's also a bunch of people who come together in the end almost like a family, no matter how many stupid situations they find themselves in," he says. "The three main characters are really just 12-year-olds who grew up in an environment that never forced them to change that mindset."

The Atlantic Canada humour isn't lost on Americans, he said.

"It's sort of a universal thing, those kinds of guys," Carney said. "You see them here too, but with southern accents. You'd probably see them in Europe as well, working on their cars and getting drunk. It resonates no matter where you are."

Carney has one plea, though - he desperately wants to see the Ivan Reitman-produced film, which has yet to be picked up by an American distributor. Attempts to sell the film in the U.S. are a "work in progress," says a source close to the negotiations who adds that the plan was to see the movie generate a buzz in Canada before selling it south of the border.

"Unfortunately, I can't see the movie here, and that sucks," says Carney. "I'm not going to travel to Canada to see a movie, and I'd rather not wait for it to come out on video, so someone has to find a way to get it here."

"Trailer Park Boys: The Movie" was the 11th top-grossing film in North America following its opening weekend, even without American theatres. It's in wide release in Canada, playing on more than 200 screens and grossing an estimated $1.3 million this Thanksgiving weekend.

"The numbers for this film were high enough to warrant the No. 11 position," said Barb Matheson of Alliance Atlantis. "This is just a testament to the film's success so far."

Peter Cipriani, 40, is a bartender in Boston who's hooked on the Trailer Park Boys - again, thanks to his friend Pye.

"I love it because it's hilarious, the accents are hilarious, and they kind of take chances with the comedy and do things that you'd never see on television in the United States," Cipriani says. "You see them go to jail every now and again; there are a lot of drug and alcohol jokes."

And Cipriani is doing his best to spread the humour to his American patrons, trying to be as much like the booze-loving Julian as possible.

"I walk around all day in a tight black T-shirt with a rum and Coke in my hand; I'm always carrying one around," Cipriani jokes.

our small town boys have hit the big screen
if you have no clue who they are, here's a brief introduction:
julian always a drink in hand and often has to get the crew out of trouble
bubbles takes care of all the stray kitties in the park, collects shopping carts for cash
and tries to keep the other two on the straight and narrow
ricky likes to grow weed and thinks of other hair brained ideas to make cash
which usually lands them back in jail

they've gone from cult tv status to iconic status and now they have a movie introduce them to american audiences.
to me, bubbles makes the show. sometimes julian reminds me of jersey
