New York

Hi all

I am bringing my wife to New York for the first time and we only have 5 days so we are looking to do as much as we can whilst there and sleep when we get home. Just looking for any suggestions of places to go other than the obvious Statue of Lib etc.
Also looking for recommendations of places to eat and general entertainment, live music etc. This will be our first time to America so hoping to make it special.

Thanks

I know you said non-touristy, but I always recommend going to at least one museum: The Metropolitan Museum of Art is great b/c it has all types of art from all over the world while the MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) is contemporary & modern art--it has lots of famous paintings that you may have seen in art history books.

A stroll through Central Park is a must...if you can, walk around the Reservoir, when you get to the north side there are beautiful views of midtown Manhattan.

The ice skating rink outside Rockefeller Center is now open (a bit touristy imo) but thought I'd throw it out there.

Will you be hunting for Prince treasures while here? If so, I can orgnote you some stores that sell vinyl and imports. wink

I recently went to this cute Italian restaurant in the Theater district:
Cascina ristorante
647 Ninth Avenue (at 45th)
www.cascinanyc.com

it's not that fancy, but they have a woodburning oven inside and the food was good. It's not that expensive either. Check out their website.

Org note if you are have specific questions--I can try to help more.

Have fun! (We're not rude--really!) biggrin
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

if you like broadway, i highly recommend "the 24th annual putnam county spelling bee", and especially i recommend doing their lottery for tickets program. we have been three times and gotten tickets everytime. you go to the theatre at 6:00, put your name in the drawing, and if pulled the tickets are only $25.00, and are the best seats in the house.

"hairspray", "the drowsy chaperone", and "avenue q" are also hilarious.

central park is also a must.

if you're looking for new/weirdo/obscure music, you should check out OTHER MUSIC on the corner 4th and lafayette - i always go in with an open mind and walk out with some kind of insane new music discovery. a few blocks up on st. marks between 2nd and 3rd, you can also drop in to MONDO KIM'S, which has a great music selection as well (though kinda pricey) and a REALLY good DVD section, with lots of rarities and imports. whenever i visit NYC, i always hit these two places up...oh, and st. mark's bookstore on 3rd ave - probably my favorite bookstore in NYC.

ooh, and "monty python's spam-a-lot" is hysterical too, but you need to have at least a passing knowledge of the film.

i recommend going to the tkts booth in times square and seeing wht is half off ticket price that day. there is very little need to pay full price for tickets on broadway between the tkts booth and the lotteries.

yeah, i can spend an entire day in the strand and still not feel like i've checked out everything. plus, they have cute t-shirts. giggle

st. marks bookstore is cool because the great majority of their stock is from independent publishers. lots of cool art books and funky little novels and things. i never walk out of there empty handed.
