Preview: Seattle at St. Louis
The Seahawks (3-1) travel to St. Louis (4-1) and take on the Rams in an NFC West matchup. The winner of this game will take an early lead in the division. Kickoff is set for 10 a.m. (PT). Seattle heads into this week coming off of their bye following a loss at Chicago on October 1. The Rams held on for a 23-20 victory last Sunday at Green Bay to improve to 4-1. Seattle is looking for their first 4-1 start since opening the season 5-1 in 2003. It would also mark their second 4-1 start in the last 21 seasons (1986). This week’s game pits the two winningest teams in the division since realignment in 2002. Seattle boasts the top mark with a 42-26 record (.618) followed by St. Louis’ 37-32 record (.536). Seattle has won the last two division crowns, with St. Louis winning in 2003. San Francisco is 23-41 (.362) while Arizona is 21-48 (.304). This will be the 16th regular-season meeting between the two teams, with the Rams leading 9-6 in those games. Seattle is looking for their third consecutive win over St. Louis and ninth consecutive regular-season NFC West victory after winning 21-10 versus Arizona on September 17. Seattle is 0-1 versus the Rams in the postseason, dropping a 2004 Wild Card game 27-20 in Seattle on January 8, 2005. Last season, Seattle swept both games played between the two division rivals: winning 37-31 in a shootout in St. Louis on October 9, and winning 31-16 in Seattle on November 13. Those two wins avenged three losses to St. Louis in 2004, including the Wild Card Playoff matchup in Seattle. Including last year’s win and a 17-9 victory on October 19, 1997, Seattle is 2-5 all-time in games played at St. Louis. Date: Sunday, Oct. 15 Kickoff: 10:00 am PT Record: Seahawks 3-1 Rams 4-1 Series: Rams lead 9-6 TV: FOX (Channel 13 in Seattle) Ron Pitts (play-by-play) Brian Baldinger (analyst) Jay Glazer (sideline reports) Radio: KIRO (710 am) Steve Raible (play-by-play) Warren Moon (analysis) Akemi Takei (sideline reports) (Seahawks Radio Network) Next Week: Seattle vs. Minnesota Qwest Field (Oct. 22) St. Louis Rams Bye Week (at San Diego 10/29

Preview: Seattle at St. Louis NFL.com wire reports ST. LOUIS (Oct. 11, 2006) -- The Seattle Seahawks have had two weeks to recover from the worst loss of the Mike Holmgren era. A victory Sunday over the surprising St. Louis Rams, which would move the Seahawks atop the NFC West, would certainly help that process. Seattle returns from its bye week to face the Rams at the Edward Jones Dome with first place at stake. The Seahawks (3-1) finished September undefeated, but suffered a humbling 37-6 defeat at Chicago on Oct. 1. The loss was the most lopsided since Holmgren arrived in Seattle in 1999, as the Seahawks allowed a season-high 362 yards of total offense. Matt Hasselbeck completed only 16 of 35 passes for Seattle, while getting intercepted twice and sacked five times. "The team has lost games, and we will lose again, but I was most disappointed in the type of game it was. That bothered me," Holmgren said. The defending NFC champions are struggling on offense compared with last season. Seattle, which averaged a league-leading 28.3 points per game in 2005, is down to 19.5 through its first four games. The difference has been even more stark on the road, where the Seahawks have yet to score a touchdown in two contests. Hasselbeck has thrown seven interceptions, just two fewer than his nine from all of last season. He's also been sacked 13 times in four games as the offense tries to adjust to the absence of All-Pro guard Steve Hutchinson, who departed for Minnesota via free agency in the offseason. "He's a great player ... It was a tough loss," Hasselbeck said. Steady play from Marc Bulger has the Rams challenging the Seahawks in the NFC West. "I think it's a loss that we can overcome. But at the same time, there are some things that Hutch brought to our team in terms of leadership and intensity in the locker room -- and also maybe even a little bit of a nasty streak, an intimidation factor. You can't really replace that." Seattle also expects to be without the reigning league MVP for one more week. Running back Shaun Alexander is targeting his return for next week against Minnesota as he recovers from the broken foot that sidelined him against the Bears. Maurice Morris, who gained 35 yards on 11 yards in Alexander's place, is expected to start again Sunday. One key Seahawks offensive starter expects to return, however. Tight end Jerramy Stevens, who has not played since the Super Bowl due to torn cartilage in his left knee, should be ready to take the field for at least 30 plays against the Rams. "Jerramy has something that we haven't had on the field this year," Hasselbeck said of Stevens, who caught 45 passes for 554 yards and five TDs -- all career highs -- last season. "He adds an element of size and speed and the ability to get open." The Seattle offense had little difficulty against the Rams last season, exceeding 30 points and 400 total yards in each contest -- both Seahawks victories. Alexander ran for a total of 284 yards and five touchdowns in the two wins. This St. Louis club may pose a tougher challenge, though. After going 6-10 last season and 8-8 in 2005, the Rams have won four of their first five games under new coach Scott Linehan. The St. Louis defense has forced 15 turnovers while the offense has committed only three, resulting in a league-best plus-12 turnover ratio. "A lot of people are looking at us and saying, 'How'd they get to 4-1?"' Rams defensive coordinator Jim Haslett said. "The offense is doing a great job of protecting the football and we're doing a good job getting the football." The Rams used a turnover to secure a 23-20 victory at Green Bay last Sunday. Leonard Little forced Packers quarterback Brett Favre to fumble with 36 seconds remaining, and Jerametrius Butler recovered on the St. Louis 13-yard line. The hot start, though, may be somewhat deceiving. All four St. Louis victories have come by eight points or fewer, and the opponents the Rams have defeated during their current three-game winning streak -- Arizona, Detroit and Green Bay -- are a combined 2-13. Marc Bulger completed 18 of 28 passes for 228 yards and two TDs and no interceptions against the Packers. He's the only quarterback to start every game this season who has yet to throw an interception, and his run of 214 attempts without getting picked off is the longest in Rams franchise history. A win over the Seahawks would give St. Louis a 1 1/2-game division lead over Seattle heading into its bye week, and its best start since it opened 6-0 in 2001, the season of its last Super Bowl appearance. "Seattle has been our rival the last four or five years and they're going to be tough," Bulger said. "They are the division champs and it is up to us to unseat them." Seattle: INJURIES OUT RB Shaun Alexander (Foot) DE Joe Tafoya (Knee) G Floyd Womack (Knee) QUESTIONABLE WR Bobby Engram (Illness) St Louis: INJURIES OUT FB Paul Smith (Eye) QUESTIONABLE CB Fakhir Brown (Ankle) CB Travis Fisher (Thigh)

The Rams' secondary is banged up. It's looking like rookie Tye Hill will start opposite Travis Fisher at corner because Fakhir Brown has a bad ankle. The Rams have had strong safety Corey Chavous defend the slot, which seems like a high-risk proposition against Seattle. This is a potentially favorable matchup for Seattle as long as the pass protection is adequate. The Hawks will miss Bobby Engram but D.J. Hackett is a nice option against the Rams. He hurt them repeatedly last season, and he's been around here enough to have a rapport with Matt Hasselbeck.
