Once. It was my birthday and as a present my friends installed a computer system in my car similar to Knight Rider. Except, unlike Knight Rider, the intelligence system had the raspy voice of a chain smoking great-aunt and similar interests to my own: scorpions, drinking & driving, GWAR, oatmeal. After a few weeks together I fell head over heels.

On the night we were meant to consumate our relationship, we got into a terrible accident with a semi truck and my cold steel lover was destroyed. But more than that, all that I gave her was destroyed. My heart. My virtue. My future. There is no human that can match what we had. My true self died that night, too.

i never know if it's real or not until well after it's over. sometimes i realize it was just a need to attach to someone else, sometimes i realize it was just physical infatuation, sometimes i realize i'd just been hoodwinked.

that said, i've only ever been hardcore madly helpless in love a couple of times. once was more about it being a new experience, and the other time, i suppose, was about as genuine as i've ever known.

We used to work together in accounting and often had special projects together. We are an interracial couple and when folks found we were dating they all turned on us including the company. We have fought through all that and are one. All this was just 7 years ago. But we fought for each other. I don't know what I'd do without her in my life.

Honestly? I don't think I've ever been in love. And I don't mean that as harsh as it sounds.

I've been in situations where, at the time, I thought I was but - looking back - I wasn't really. I don't think I was ready for it. It's so complicated I wouldn't know where to begin. But you can sum it up by saying it had a lot to do with low self-esteem, not meeting the right people, those sort of things.

But love *is* the great lifeforce. So, like Mach says, where it may be lacking in some areas (i.e. romantically), I've more than made up for it through friends and music. These things sustain me. All good things come to those who wait, anyway.

lovely stories, appreciate ur sharing them. always nice to hear about those who found their soulmate. for those who havent, i tend to agree, all good things come to those who wait.
