Keep in mind that Tommy the movie was only based on the Who's rock opera. Though a lot of the music was the same, it was not performed by The Who, and I recall other songs added to it as well.

The actual album is very good and a very important addition to any classic/prog or psychedelic rock collection.

Oh, don't get me wrong, though I'm not a fan, the album is fine.

The movie however, um, yeah.....not so much. disbelief

Disagree. The "Tommy" film was certainly a departure from the original album and the film is totally dated as a '70s stoner movie, but the film has a distinct style and never ceases to be entertaining. Of course its over the top and it's supposed to be--this is a Ken Russell movie. And you can't dismiss the scene where Ann Margaret is slithering about in a sea of baked beans.

ACID. Indeed.

I havne't seen Yellow Submarine. Seeing that AND Sgt. Peppers might be enough to make my head asplode.

Here's a fun(?) fact:

Cousin Kevin from Tommy is played by the same guy as Dougie Shears in Sgt. Peppers. WTF.

That's the only part of Tommy I've ever seen actually. It was kinda fun and freaky watching Tina shake around like that. She looks like she's having a seizure.
