Hi, Carrie... I have an IUD because I can't be on any other form of birth control. I had it put in earlier this year at the low, low price of $527. It wasn't painful, more uncomfortable than anything else. Basically felt like an exam with a little cramping. I didn't bleed, but my doctor said that spotting was normal. With any luck, next year it will be removed because I am going in for a hysterectomy! *crosses fingers*

You don't have sperm in your precum then? (I'm sorry but say NO to "the rhythm method")

I've have friends that have had it and they said that they had cramping and spotting but once that went away that haven't had any problems. What ever you do, do not and I repeat do not get that damn depro shot. That damn shot causes way too many problems. Just Call Me Afrochick

I know I am not an org lady but I thought I would add my If you are in any way thinking of having kids in the future try and avoid an IUD, while they can be very effective against pregnancy there are all sorts of mild infection issues that can cause fertility problems down the line. Usually not recommended until you have a family. If the pill is causing you probs, change brand or combination. I won't patronise you with all the alternatives, as I am sure you know. SupaFunkyOrgangrinderSexy said: I still don't quite understand the IUD. Does it irritate the lining of the uterus thus making implantation almost impossible? I really don't understand how that thing works....
How it works: The IUD is a T-shaped device that comes with one of two active ingredients: copper or progesterone-containing. It is inserted into the uterus through the vagina by a physician and remains there for ten or fewer years. A string attached to the base of the T shape allows easy removal. Intrauterine devices are believed to work by preventing a sperm from fertilizing an egg. In the case of the copper IUD, copper ions in the uterine and tubal fluids are believed to prevent fertilization of the egg. Studies show that copper IUDs actually prevent fertilization of an egg and not implantation of a fertilized egg although theoretically this is possible (and is the common belief of how they work). The progesterone IUD works hormonally by preventing ovulation and thickening the cervical mucus to prevent sperm from entering the uterus. The copper IUD can be used for up to 10 years; the progesterone IUD can be used for 1 year.

i found some info, not sure if it's just the same old you've been reading, but i dont know anyone that's ever had it before, though, i will ask around What are the chances of getting pregnant while using an IUD? Copper: Typical use: 0.8% Perfect use: 0.6% Progesterone: Typical use: 2% Perfect use: 1.5% Advantages to using an IUD? With an IUD in place, the female does not have to think about using contraception when having sex, or every day in the case of the pill (although she should use other means to prevent against STDs). The IUD does not change the hormone levels throughout the body as do other contraception methods such as the pill. The cost of the copper IUD can be low in the long run compared to birth control methods that must be purchased more frequently. Disadvantages to using an IUD? Menstrual cramps may increase. Bleeding may occur between periods. Periods may be heavier and last longer. This may cause anemia. Increases risk of serious infection (PID) and sterility. IUD may fall out. Pregnancy while using the IUD, although rare, may be dangerous and lead to infections or ectopic pregnancies. I used it a few years ago... getting one next week again.. but not the copper one The Borg... Partypoopers of the galaxy.. ( Medical Hologram )

Insurance doesn't cover it according to my doctor. I didn't have any anyway, so it didn't matter in my case. I can't be on anything with hormones in it because I'm 35 and a smoker (again)... so this was my only option other than tubal litigation, or the hysterectomy.

You don't have sperm in your precum then? (I'm sorry but say NO to "the rhythm method") Rhythm method is about her rhythm, not yours. I dated a girl who knew her cycle so well she could do this, and she knew exactly when it wasn't safe. But it terrified me no end. Of course, being young & horny I went along with it! God, we're dumb sometimes. My Legacy

CarrieLee said: katt said: CarrieLee have u looked into the three year contraceptive implant?
No....what is it???? The three year contraceptive implant is a small tube that is put under the skin in the inside of the upper arm, the tube contains a progestogen hormone. The hormone in the implant is released slowly into the bloodstream and works by stopping ovulation, it thickens the mucus made by the cervix by doing this it stops sperm getting through to the uterus. The good thing about it is 99% effective, u only gey it removed every 3 years and a new one implanted & period pains are less painfull & u can get it removed anytime u want. The down side is as with all hormon contraceptives u can have mood changes, painfull breast, weight gain etc.

having never been on the pill i am surprised that so many don't like how they feel while they are on it
it seems that most methods listed here involve hormones if it bothers you in low dose pill form wouldn't it bother you in the other methods as well? what about other barrier forms? does anyone use diaphrams anymore?? what about the sponge? although i guess that could get kind of expensive on a long term basis...

So you shouldn't have the same side effects as with pills taken orally or the patch. I've thought about it, but I don't like the idea of a ring inside of me for 3 weeks at a time. That's just odd. |
