I visited Steve Irwins Zoo and was kind of amused at the number of dolls and other paraphernalia made almost entirely of non environmentaly friendly plastic.
Dolls of Steve, his wife, even his children..
Education or exploitation? Depends on how 1 looks at it i guess...

Here's something of interest, transcript of Steve Irwins appearance on Andrew Denton's 'Enough Rope'..

I think the money would go into the upkeep of the zoo, employees salaries, feeding the animals, etc. It costs money to run the zoo.

Fair enough, but tell me where all that plastic goes when the dolls/bags/pencil cases/plastic animals end up in the rubbish?

Media r now debating whether the footage of the attack which led 2 Steve's death should B aired or made public.
His own production company was shooting 4 a DVD and has captured the whole dramatic episode.

Would anybody here B prepared 2 watch that?

It is in the hands of the police so i doubt that will happen, if it did then they will be investigated.

It is the property of Steve Irwin's production company. Ultimately I think the family will have the final say on whether it's released.

His manager and long time friend John Stainton says the footage (filmed underwater) is 'shocking' and shows Steve pulling the Rays spear out of his chest.
I wonder what Steve would have wanted. hmmm

I can see them making a documentary to show his life’s work with footage of his recent works as a lasting memory yet leaving out what took his life. Only time will tell, just now his poor family need time for just them and the media and public should respect this.

All I can say is: It's a good thing Steve Irwin lived the life he did. Makes up for the rest of us who are afraid of spiders,(brown recluse)are afraid of heights, claustiphobic,_____ fill in the blank. He certainly lived life to the fullest. His wife had to have some understanding of the risks he was willing to take for the adrenaline.

I'm pretty crushed by this, surprisingly so. I didn't consider myself a huge fan or anything, but I did enjoy watching his shows when they were on. The guy just really loved life, and it has affected me more than I thought it would. I really feel for his family. sad

His work had inherent risks, which he mangaed 2 the best of his ability.
Discussion here is not taking away from his family at this time, (who I cannot imagine being 'poor' incidentally) and they have of course always maintained a high public profile/image. That has it's own inherent risks.

Stop attempting to jack this thread the word “Poor” was not meant to mean in the monetary term. Tsk Tsk U and I will no longer communicate on this subject on this thread.

Steve Irwin was killed by peaceful fish

SYDNEY: The irony of Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin's death is that he was not killed by one of the deadly creatures he regularly handled, but by a relatively peaceful fish, scientists said on Monday.

Irwin, renowned worldwide as a fearless environmentalist happy to handle crocodiles and snakes on his television show, was killed on Monday by a stingray -- a flattish, diamond-shaped fish which rarely attacks humans.

"They are normally not aggressive and use their long barbed tail to protect themselves from predators such as sharks and killer whales," said Sean Connell, a marine ecologist at the University of Adelaide.

"They feed on tiny animals on the sea floor. I have never heard of an unprovoked attack from a stingray."

Despite their name, it is not the venom from the sting that is most dangerous, scientists say.

Irwin was killed when a stingray barb punctured his chest as he was filming on the famed Great Barrier Reef.

"What happened to Steve Irwin is like being stabbed in the heart," said Geoff Isbister, a clinical toxicologist at the Mater Hospital in Newcastle on Australia's east coast.

"It has little to do with the venom and all to do with the trauma caused by the barb of the stingray."

One other person was known to have died in Australia from a similar injury to the chest, but most stingray injuries resulted from people stepping on them in shallow water and getting a barb in the ankle, he said.

"Stingrays only sting in defence; they're not aggressive animals so the animal must have felt threatened," said Bryan Fry, director of the Australian Venom Research Unit at the University of Melbourne.

"It would have to have been a large ray with a disc size of up to 2.5 metres.

"The stingray's venom would not have been a factor. While extremely painful, stingray venom is rarely lethal."

I'm not going to go so far as to say that the Crocodile Hunter deserved to die, but you can only (figuratively... and literally) poke sticks in the faces of wild animals for so long before they've collectively decided they've had enough and decide to kill you.
