Book tip

The best book I've read in 5 years:

'The wind-up bird chronicle' by the Japanese writer Haruki Murakami.

Anyone else who's read it? If not, you better start reading. wink

I am not letting that motherfucker drop off page one!

It's starting to elicit very strong opinions from people. I think with enough poking and prodding, I can probably get someone to start crying.

Wow. If I read 5 a month that's extraordinary.

I shoot for four a month.

No. I tried to write several books, I have good subjects, but I'm not good at telling stories. Maybe one day...

I repeat once more...read this book.

It's one of the first books that make me say...'if you don't like it, go see a doctor'

The English translation is excellent by the way.

i read it earlier this year. nod

it was a page-turner, for sure. i had a lot of fun getting to the end, though i don't know if i felt the 'twilight zone' moment i was expecting.

i read very slowly. i'm always afraid of missing the meaning of what i'm reading, so i'm very meditatey about writing/writers i like. it takes me forever to get through a book i'm really enjoying.

The only thing I didn't like too much about the book is the fact that as a reader, you really feel this book was constructed in parts. In the beginning I had great respect for the masterplan I thought the author was handling when writing this book, but as I continued, I felt more and more this book was divided in chapters.

The end was indeed somewhat disappointing, but I can't see how an end to such a marvelous book can be not disappointing.

yeah...some of the divergent "sub-stories" felt like orphaned novellas that the author wanted to do something with, so he spliced them into his book. i don't blame him for doing that, but it could have been a little more seamless. the main story was pretty fantastic, though. it's really good summer reading.
