It's officially called Alien Registration Card (hmm) and is given as ID to foreigners working here, but everybody including the authorities refer to it as "gaijin card" which is basically as offensive as it would be if there was a "negro card". confused

On my person at any given time:

Albuterol inhaler
Keys
Cell phone
Never more than one credit card
Driver's license
Proof of auto insurance
Medical and mental insurance cards
A little cash
Assorted business cards that I've collected
Increasingly, some random swatch(es) of fabric that I like. confuse It seems I'm always planning on having something made. Funny, though, that it has yet to happen.

So 'gaijin' is a derogatory term for foreigners? Sounds a bit like the way white foreigners here in Thailand are called 'farang' (dark or olive skinned people, regardless of where they're from aren't called 'farangs', but sometimes likely something else very offensive). The word itself is actually the same as 'guava' in Thai and is also found in 'farangseht', the Thai word for France. Foreigners sometimes find it offensive due to the way it's said and since there is a correct, more respectful term for foreigner which is never used (khon dtang phateht).

It's very similar then, because there is a more politically correct term for "gaijins", namely "gaikokojin". In all honesty "gaikokojin" sounds even worse in and of itself, but because of its far more respectful connotations it is preferred by foreigners. Try getting the Japanese to use it though... rolleyes
