What Percent of an effort are you willing to give?

Have you ever, well I'm sure almost 100% of you have, heard someone say they will give 110%, 200%?

What does that mean? Isn't it a lie? Because truthfully, one can only give 100% of effort or energy.

Right?

I guess it kind of counts if you stay up for days on end (which can't be good) doing something just because you feel that's how much it will take. That's a lot of dedication, and though you really can't get further than 100 percent, I can see where it's sort of more than that because you're pushing yourself too far.

If that makes sense.

There is no extra distance one can push themself. If you push yourself to the max it's 100%.

If you are willing to give 110% doesn't that really mean most of the time you're only willing to give 90%?

The mind needs motivation... sometimes it just helps to manipulate the numbers (or words) a little to give a feeling that something is worth more than what we want it to be. I've got a tendency of backing out after the first try to re-evaluate where everything is so it takes a while to get back into the first task when there's a second one running at a different pace.

hmmm Does that mean that I can say I'm giving it 70% of my attention, which would be the logical maximum considering the fact that the remaining 30% is doing something else?

You can push yourself more than you should...never past your max, just past the point where you should go. When you're working so hard you're ill, I guess I'm thinking you should have some kind of extra credit. But I'm never literal anyway.

Well of the top of my head I would say I'm not worried about it. I'm just trying to start a topic, you know how it is, but shouldn't we be conserned in the little lies people tell daily?

I think we need to be concerned with the lies we tell ourselves...those matter the most.

doesn't this statement scream for a philosophical angle of observation?

...I mean, if u do ur work to the fullest of ur abilities....giving ur 100%...but then are called upon to pick up or complete the work of another, aren't u, in essence, giving MORE than 100%? and in that vein, if u do complete the other's work, doesn't that equal 100% on top of ur 100%?

Ergo....100% + 100% = 200%

right??? hmmm

There is a difference between lies proffered for duplicitous purposes, and hyperbole to make a point or give emphasis.

Whoa!

So if there are two workers on a project and they are giving 110% that means they both aren't giving 100%.

Some people find irony in everything.
Me being one of those.
Other's however would like to argue the term.
I find it ironic that when ever someone wants to call something ironic there will always be another that will want to argue the term's correct function.

no...again, philosophically, ur latest idea ventures into the realm of oneness of spirit...of focus and effort towards the same goal...so if they SAY they are each giving 110%, they are, philosophically of course, FULL OF SHIT!!! lol

...of course u realize I, myself, am dangerously talkin out of my booty!

Yes, not I however sir. I'd rather stay liquid and see where the discussion goes. I hate taking hard line stances and only do so when it is required of me.
