Oprah Winfrey says she is not gay

Mon Jul 17, 6:54 PM ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. television talk show queen
Oprah Winfrey on Monday moved to quash rumors about her relationship with her best friend, saying she is not gay.

In the August issue of O, The Oprah Magazine, the TV star says some people misunderstand her close friendship of 30 years with Gayle King, an editor on the magazine often seen with Winfrey in public.

"I understand why people think we're gay," Winfrey tells the magazine. "There isn't a definition in our culture for this kind of bond between women. So I get why people have to label it -- how can you be this close without it being sexual?"

In the article, Winfrey and King, who is divorced with two children, discuss their 30-year friendship and "four-times-a-day phone calls."

The friends say they would have no problem telling the public if they were in a sexual relationship.

"The truth is, if we were gay, we would tell you, because there's nothing wrong with being gay," says King.

King says the rumors used to bother her as "it's hard enough to get a date on Saturday night" but said she doesn't care anymore. Winfrey, 52, who has never been married, agrees.

"I've told nearly everything there is to tell. All my stuff is out there. People think I'd be so ashamed of being gay that I wouldn't admit it? Oh, please."

Personally , it would make aweful porn. Worse than Jenny and Sally Jesse lesbian porn even. Though Jerry Springer and Montel would be kind of hot I guess. shrug

i feel like oprah's sexuality is a nonissue. it's a very trifling thing to focus on considering all of her other accomplishments.

it's not like she's some vacant paris hilton clone who does shit like have sex on camera and flash her twat around. oprah has more to her.

I think that's an interesting question.

Oprah tends to come off as non-sexual. That's her schtick. I don't even think the white women who her predominate her audience and target market buy her as a sexual being or her "relationship/arrangement" with Steadman as a truly romantic one. I know I don't.

But I tend to be cynical about the fair majority of what Oprah does. shrug

nod

That's why she's so endearing because she's non-threatening in that sense. That's why her wealth isn't as off putting, the non-sexual/a-sexual persona cuts down on the likelihood of jealousy and makes the person more loveable. This persona is found all throughout American folklore, AKA Mammy.

Yeah!! Exactly. I'm always saying that, that her asexual deal reinforces Mammy stereotypes! nod Add to that her annual "giveaway" episode. Such a good Mammy!

But her main market does. I could go on and on about her "Caller, you say what?" days and her then-demonization of men. But, I'm trying to heal... lol
