Seattle clash for the Bluebirds

Steve Tucker, Western Mail
http://icwales.icnetwork.co.uk/

CARDIFF CITY have lined up a summer friendly at the spectacular home of one of American football's most famous teams - the Seattle Seahawks.

On July 18, the Bluebirds will face the Washington state city's soccer side, the Seattle Sounders, in the 67,000 capacity Qwest Stadium, a venue more used to gridiron than the round-ball game.

The Sounders are the current champions of the United Soccer League's First Division.

The friendly will kick off at 7pm local time.

The United Soccer League (USL), First Division Seattle Sounders won the 2005 Championship, their 3rd title since 1995.
And since their re-birth in 1994, the Sounders have made it to post-season play 11 of 12 years. woot!

Sounders, Cardiff City tie
Galindo sees first action since injury against Chivas USA

By MATTHEW GASCHK
SPECIAL TO THE SEATTLE P-I

It was hard to tell who was more excited when the Sounders evened the score at 1-1 in the 71st minute of their friendly match with Cardiff City FC on Tuesday night at Qwest Field.

Was it Roger Levesque, who ended a 21-game scoreless streak with a diving header into the net? Or was it Maykel Galindo, who was warming up along the endline to play in his first game since May 7 and leaped onto Levesque's back in celebration after the goal?

Either way, both celebrated a triumphant return in the 1-1 tie with the Coca-Cola English League Championship team with 4,052 in attendance.

Levesque has seen his share of scoring chances this season, but had not been able to add to his total of 19 goals over the past two seasons with the Sounders. That changed with a rifled pass off the foot of Jake Sagare, who used his quick feet to maneuver past a Bluebirds defender on the right side of the penalty box. Levesque dove in front of Cardiff City goalkeeper Neil Alexander and thundered a header into the back of the net.

"That was a great goal. It was a great ball by Sagare -- just a textbook goal," Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer said. "Hopefully that gets Roger some momentum for his own scoring touch for these last games of the season."

Eight minutes later, Galindo entered the game for Levesque to get his first playing time since the ill-fated exhibition against Chivas USA in May.

In that match, Galindo broke his nose and orbital bone in a collision with former Sounders goalkeeper Preston Burpo while chasing down a leading pass. He was originally diagnosed with just a broken nose, but a CAT scan later that week revealed a fractured orbital bone that required surgery, causing him to miss 20 games.

"It's great for the team to have him back. It was an unfortunate way to start the year," Levesque said. "He's just going to make our team better. We'll see if we can make a playoff push."

As strong as the Sounders were in the second half, Cardiff City was equally strong in the first. With every ball bouncing their way and heralded Newcastle transfer Michael Chopra scoring within the games first four minutes, Seattle was fortunate to enter halftime with just a 1-0 deficit.

Paul Parry took the ball up the left side near the edge of the top of the box and sent a high pass across the middle, where Chopra hammered a header just over Chris Eylander's outreached hand in the corner of the net to give Cardiff City the 1-0 lead.

While that was the only goal of the game until Levesque's late heroics, it certainly wasn't Cardiff City's only offensive output. Chopra had another opportunity in the 11th minute, but skipped the ball across the ground into Eylander's chest. Another great chance in the 26th minute went for naught when Seattle defender Noah Merl stonewalled Stephen Thompson.

Seattle controlled the ball for most of the second half and Levesque started a string of four straight looks at the goal with a deflected shot in the 69th minute. Seconds later, Andrew Gregor fired a shot from 25 feet that Alexander knocked over the endline, then Danny Jackson sent a shot wide right.

Chopra and Galindo traded chances in stoppage time, but were unable to break the 1-1 tie.
